    The first major land battle of the civil war. The battle showed Lincoln that the war would be very long and hard. The Union commander was Irvin McDowell and the Confederate commander was Joeseph E. Johnston, and they suffered 4700 casulaties.   • Hampton Roads

    Hampton Roads
    The Confederate steamed into Hampton Roads and proceded to sink Cumberland and ran Congress agruond. The Union initiated te first use of ironclads ever. They foght for awhile and finally Virginia (Confederate) retired. 433 Casualties. The result was inconclusive.   • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    Fought in Tennessee. Confederates struck first, internding to drive the Union defenders into the west. The Confederate battle lines became confused and instead fell to the northeast. Confederates were forced to retreat, ending their hopes to block the Union advance. 23,746 casulaties. "All day we fought the rebels but had to give way; we disputed every inch of ground. Lost four killed and sixteen wounded out of company...." Luetenet William Reid.
  • Antietam

    THe Union confronted Lee's army in Maryland. On the 17th, they mounted a powerful assult that began the bloodiest day in American military history. They continued to skirmish throughout the 18th, and the battle resulted in a Union victory. There were 22,717 casualties.   • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Lincoln issues this to free all slaves. The Proclamation made abolition a central goal of the war. Slavery was actually made illegal by the 13th amendment, and the proclomation only applied to ten states that were still in rebellion.

    "A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot humbling other." -Robert E. Lee. Resulted in Confederate victory. The Union commander was Joseph Hooker, the COnfederate commander was Robert E. Lee. The war took place in Virginia and resuted in 24,000 casualties.

    Confederate forces attacked the town of Gettsyburg, driving Union defenders back. On July 4th, Lee withdrew his army and the result was a Union victory. There were 51, 000 casulaties.     the Union commander was WIlliam Rosecrans, The confederate commander was Brackston Bragg. The battle took place in Georgia and resulted in a Confederate victory as well as 34,624 casulaties. "It is well that war is so terrible, lest we should grow to fond of it." -Robert E. Lee

    Gettysburg Address
    The Gettysburg Adress in a suprisingly short seach made by President Abraham Lincoln that was not actually the main prpose of the event. He was called upon to say a few words after a speaker gave a two-hour monolouge. It was given four and a half months after the Civil War ended. It was only a two minutes speech, but it's well-known and goes down in history as one of the best presidential adresses in America.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    Also known as the "Savannah Campaign." General Sherman captured Atanta, Georgia on te16th of November and then proceeded led his troops to capture Savannah. It inflicted damage to industry and infrastructure.
