  • 1st Bull Run

    Confederate General: Joseph E. Johnson and P. G. T. Beauregard
    Significance: It was the first major clas of the war and it shattered Union morale.
  • Shiloh

    Outcome: Union
    Union General: Ulysses S. Grant
    Confederate General: Albert Sydney Johnston
    Significance: This battle gave Tennessee to Union control.
  • 2nd Bull Run

    Outcome: Confederate

    Confederate: Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson
    Significance: It was the turning point for the Confederates.
  • Antietam

    Significance: It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war and it resulted in President Abraham Lincoln issuing his Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.
  • Fredericksburg

    Confederate General: Robert E. Lee
    Significance: It was the first major opposing river crossing and Confederate morale soared.
  • Chancellorsville

    Confederate General: Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson
    Significance: One of the bloodiest battles, considered to be Robert E. Lee's greatest victory, and the Confederacy lost Stonewall Jackson.
  • Vicksburg

    Significance: It cut the Confederacy off from Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.
  • Gettysburg

    Significance: It was the turning point of the war, it was an enormous battle, and Lincoln used it to condone the cost of the war.
  • Sherman's March

    Union General: WIllilam Tecumseh Sherman
    Significance: This march helped Lincoln win the re-election and showed the Confederacy that Union was beating them.
    The Union marched from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia.
  • Appomattox

    Confederate General: Robert E. Lee
    Significance: This battle ended the Civil War.
