  • Fort Sumter

    This is where the First shots of the Civil War were shot. President Lincoln decided to resupply the fort and in retaliation, General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded it. 36 hours later, and Anderson and 86 union soldiers surrendered to the confederacy. due to it being in south Carolina, the confederacy uses the fort as a whole in the unions blockade.
  • First Bull Run (Manassas)

    the Union though this was going to be a breeze, and many people showed up to watch. this is one of the first major battles of the civil war when about 35,000 Union troops under McDowell marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20,000 along Bull Run. The confederacy fought defensively for majority of the battle and then was victorious, giving the south a big moral boost and shocked the north. 3,000 union dead. 1,750 confederacy casualties.
  • Shiloh

    40,000 Confederate soldiers under Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston attacked Union soldiers under commander Grant occupying ground near Pittsburgh Landing. confederates surrounded the union troops and began to capture them but the union army continued to fight until they forced the confederacy lines back. union won this battle. The two day battle had more than 23,000 casualties and was the bloodiest battle in American history up to that time.
  • battle of Perryville

    Union General Don Carlos Buell brought the union to victory over confederate General Braxton Bragg at the Battle of Perryville. two confederate forces led by Bragg and General Edmund Kirby Smith, marched into Kentucky. they tried to get people from kentucky to join but were unsuccessful. not knowing how many union soldiers were there, bragg ordered an attack. Realizing that he was outnumbered, Bragg withdrew. 23,000 union=4,200 were killed, wounded, or missing; 15,000 Confederates= 3,400 lost.
  • Fredericksburg

    Ambrose Burnside ordered 120,000 troops to cross the Rappahannock River, where they made a two-pronged attack on the right and left flanks of Robert E. Lee’s 80,000-strong Army of Northern Virginia at Fredericksburg. this battle caused Union morale to drop when the confederates were victorious. union lost 13,000 casualties compared to some 5,000 for the Confederates.
  • battle of Chancellorsville

    Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory during the American Civil War. Lee split his troops in two, surprising Union Gen. Joseph Hooker. Hooker went into defensive position. then Lee once again split his forces and attacked, Hooker retreated across the Rappahannock River. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, was mortally wounded by friendly fire during the battle. fought in Virginia the union lost 17,278 casualties compared to confederacy's Lee’s 12,826.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s Army of the Tennessee marched on Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, trapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. the Union occupation of the town was critical to control of the strategic river. once they moved the confederate army into Vickburg, Grant launched two attacks. he lost many soldiers but Pemberton finally surrendered on July 4th. Grant's and the union's victory boosted his reputation. union dead 4,835; Confederate were 32,697.
  • battle of Gettysburg (Pickett's charge)

    Lee decided to go on the offensive and invade the North. Lincoln sent Major General George Gordon Meade who ordered the attack of Lee’s army which crossed into Maryland and marched on into southern Pennsylvania. they fought for 3 days until the confederacy waited for a Union counterattack but it never came. the Confederate general soon withdrew. the battle was a crushing defeat for the Confederacy. Union casualties in the battle numbered 23,000, while the Confederates had lost some 28,000 men
  • Battle of Appomattox

    this was the last battle fought by Robert E. Lee against the union army led by Ulysses S. Grant. Lee tried to attack to break through the Union forces to his front, thinking there wasn't a lot of armed cavalry. When he found out otherwise, he had no choice but to surrender to the union. all of this taking place in Virginia with casualties of around 500 dead or wounded.
  • Battle of Wilderness

    union being led by Grant and confeds. being led by Lee, the two armies met in Virginia woods; Wilderness. the Confederates had the upper hand because they knew the terrain. this battle was fought for 2 days and was often chaotic because of lack of space and the large number of union troops. they continued to fight until Lee ordered an attack on the Union line, Grant held his ground. the battle ended inconclusively and Union Army had around 17,500 casualties and the confeds. had around 10,000.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor

    this is one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign during the American Civil War. Union cavalry gained control of the crossroads of Old Cold Harbor, northeast Richmond, Virginia. Grant attempted to fight the confederate flanks after they received reinforcements but he was unsuccessful. the confederacy won this battle. the Union suffered 13,000 casualties, while the Confederates suffered 2,500 casualties out of 62,000 troops.
  • Antietam

    occurring at Antietam Creek in Maryland. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army against Union Gen, George McClellan’s Army was Lee’s attempt to invade the north. Union forces outnumbered Confederates by two to one, both sides fought across a 30-acre cornfield, French’s troops soon arrived and then Three hours later, Union troops had pushed the Confederates back. the union claiming victory (may be considered a stalemate) 2100 union dead and 1550 confederates dead.
  • Sherman's March to the sea

    Union Gen. William T. Sherman led 60,000 soldiers on a march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia, all just to scare people out of the confederacy. they didn't attack people but they did steal food and livestock. the confederacy were attacking union along the Tennessee and Alabama front, but instead of running around, Sherman decided to split up his troops with Gen. George Thomas. this led to confederates fighting with the Union at Griswoldville. 650 Confeds:killed/wounded, 62 union casualties.
