    There was no winner at the Battle of Antietam, although both Union General McClellan and Rebel General Lee fought hard. This battle was important because it caused the Emancipation Proclamation, showed the North's defensive abilities, and McClellan now had Lee's battle plans.

    Farragut at Mobile Bay
    David Farragut, the highest ranked Union officer, led a huge attack at Mobile Bay. His attack worked and the North took control of the last main port east of the Mississippi in the South.

    William Sherman and his Yankee troops marched through Georgia burning down cties, teraing up railroads, doing anything destructive they can, ad most improtantly, freeing 1000s of slaves.

    When General Lee left Petersburg and retreated to Richmond, Jefferson Davis decided to destroy Richmond. After this, Lee and Davis left the city. Lee continued to fight but eventually got surrounded and surrendered. This was the end of the Civil War.
