    Fort SumterThis event lasted two days and ended on the April 14th. Fort Sumter was located in South Carolina. The leader for the union in this battle was Major Robert Anderson. The Confederate leader was General P.G.T. Beauregard. And it was a Confederate victory. On April 10th Beauregard demanded the surrendur of the Union Fort Sumter. Anderson refused which started the firing of this battle. I wouldn't call it a battle though, because there were no casualites. This was the opening to the rest of the C.W

    First Bull RunThis was the first battle of Civil War. This battle took place in Mansas, Virginia. The union general was Irvin McDowell, and the confederate general was Beauregard. The vicotr in this battle was the confederates. The outcome of this battle made it real for many people. Before the battle of Bull Run, people in the north thought it would be easy and effortless to win.

    Hampton RoadsThis battle was fought between the union general John Worden, and confederate general Franklin Buchanan. This battle was inconclusive, no one won. The battle was between two boats, in fact, this was the first time in history where ironclads were used. The two boats battled at a standstill until one retired.

    Battle of Shiloh General Johnston of the confederate forces, attacked Grant's union forces at Pittsburg Landing. This battle could have been a marvelous victory fo rthe Confederates, however the Union won. With the amount of human lives on both sides, many leaders began to realize that this Civil War would not end quickly, or easily.

    Emancipation ProclamationThe Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves in the United States. Actually it just freed slaves living in states not under Union control. Also, many slaves were not freed because they were held too far away from union troops to enforce the new law. This proclamation also allowed African Americans to fight in the union army. This move made discrimination over blacks even more severe.

He took down an army 3 times his size!

    GettysburgThis battle lasted till July 3, only two days worth of fighting. The major union leader in this fight was General George G. Meade. The main confederate leader was General Robert E. Lee. This was a union victory. Robert E. Lee attempted and failed to invade the North. He thought if he won this battle, it could possibly end the war. But the loss of the south was devestating and from then on, Lee never attempted to invade the North again.

    Confederate general was John Bell Hood. This battle was a Union victory. Atlanta was considered the workshop and warehouse of the Confederacy. Thats a main reasaon why Sherman wanted to invade it. He thought he could harm Confederates war supplies by destroying Atlanta.

    Appomattox CourthouseThe surrender of General Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant wat Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. It is viewed as the end of the American Civil War. Lee was forced to retreat from Petersburg and Richmond after the Confederates were defeated at the Battle of Five Forks, because he had been cut off from the last supply line. His case was hopeless, there was nothing left to do but surrender.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Assasination of Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln was assasinated by John Wilkes Booth on that Good Friday. He was shot at Fords Theater in Washington. John thought he was somehow helping the south. The impact of his death casued the idea of the president being killed to rise. Because of this assassination, it highlighted the president as a main target in the future.

    13th amendmentThe ratification of this amendment came 8 months after the Civil War. By this date, officially, the institution of slavery was ended. When Lincoln spoke these words, slavery was ended! "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This was the greatest gain of the Civil War.
