    The Gadsen purchase was a small strip of land in NM that was bought for $10M from MX. This strip of land is a mountianless peice of land going through the south of NM. This made the transcontinental railroad go from CA to the South where Jefferson Davis was. But Lincoln and Stephen Douglass bought land near of Iowa hoping the new railroad will go through this land & make the price go up. When it was made they had to think quickly to stop the railroad from going to the South

    On Novemeber 6th 1860, the United States was electing their 16th president. It was between Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois. By the end of the electorial race, president Lincoln won with 180 to Breckenridge's 72 to Douglas' 12 to Bell's 39. He was the first Republican to be elected.

    South Carolina told many different reasons to the seceding of the Union. One reason that was commonly used was that ¨South Carolina wanted to protect their states rights to maintain slavery¨. This is not true. South Carolina pointed to a number of political “outrages” committed by the North in the decades prior to Lincoln’s election. It had nothing to due with slavery.

    The bombing at Fort Sumter
    After SC suceded from the Union, Maj. Robert Anderson had a force of 85 stationed at Fort Moultrie. On Dec. 26 he moved his men to Fort Sumter concerning their saftey. They sat there for many weeks while they were making a plan. But on Thursday, April 11, 1861 Confederate Gen. Beauregardsent talks to Maj. Andserson demanding the fort to surrender. The next day at 0430, Confederate batteries opened fired on the fort for 36 hrs.

    1st Battle of Bull Run
    The first battle of Bull run also known as First Battle of Manassas. This was the first major battle of the Civil War, which was a defeat for Federal North and a huge victory for the Confederate. Gen. McDowell lead 30,000 troops against 22,000 southern troops lead by Gen. Johnston. The North was hoping to crush the rebels and go to Richmond. But after the north lost Gen. McDowell was replaced by Gen. McClellan.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This battle was the most important battle for the Union. 23,000 soldiers were dead or wounded during this battle. Making it the bloodiest day in America history. It lifted the moral of the Union soliders, who have lost a number of battles before this. It also enabled the Union to stop the Southern invasion to the North. After the battle the battlefield was taken as a photo and this was the first time in US history to do so, and this showed the horror of war to the Americans for the first time.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation was signed after the Battle of Antietam. This document freed slaves in the confedercy, but it didn´t free slaves in the border states. It changed the focus of the war from keeping to Union together to freeing slaves. It didn´t free a single slave at the time, but it kept other nations from joining the Confederacy. The document says "And I hereby enjoin...reasonable wages." This document also meant for the newly freed slaves to come & fight for the Union.
  • Vicksburg

    Vicksburg
    Vicksburg, Mississippi was the last major port held by the Confederate. It was what kept Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas in the war, it it was cut off it would leave them isolated from the rest of the South. Gen. Grant bombed the city until they ran out of food and had known they would run out of food eventualy. It would just be a matter of time until they did. People had to keep watch 24/7 to make sure they didnt get killed by bombs and many of them dug caves in the hills.

    Gettysburg took place over a three day spread. It consist of the famous Confederate Gen. Lee. More than 92,000 Union soldiers -and 72,000 Confederate soldiers. On the second day "Pickette's Charge" became a famous attack, even tho half of the men were killed or wounded. Gen. Lee retreated. After the war more than 46,000 casualties and 8,000 deaths. Than later President Lincoln came out with the Gettysburg Address.

    From 11/15/1864 to 12/21/1864 Gen. Sherman marched across the south with 60,000 soldiers 60 miles wide from Atlanta to Savannah. The cause of this was to make GA give up it's Confederate ways. The soldiers didn't destroy the towns, & stole livestock and food from the towns.The reason that the towns were so destroyed after this is because the Confederate soldiers followed the example of the Russians when they were attacked by Napoleon. They burned everything they had so the enemy couldn't use it.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
    Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered approx. 28,000 troops to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Wilmer McLeanś home in Virginia. There was no treaty signed. The terms of the surrender was that the Conferderate soldiers would put down give up their weapons & were aloud to keep their equine and return home. Before heading home they were given a meal as fear that many would starve to death before making it home. Soon after this mercantilism ended & capitalism began.
