Civil War

  • Siege of Fort Sumter

    Cause: Lincoln becomes president and then the Souther states secede. In the south there was a US army base and after the south seceded they said it was on their property. So, they told them to leave, but they didn't leave and the south attacked.
    Effect: The south's bombardment lasted 34 hours and General Anderson and his 86 troops surrendered and the base now was under control of the Confederates.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Cause: The North, led by George McClellan, wanted to end the Civil War quickly, so they went to to Virginia really confident and met a ready Confederate army. Thinking that it would be an easy win, locals came down in carriages to watch.
    Effect: The Union made a big push, but the Confederates begins Stonewall Jackson held their ground and forced the Union to flee to D.C. After hearing of the fleeing, Northerns and Southerns knew that this war would be a long and blood one.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Cause: Robert E. Lee was going to make his first attack on a North state. The North knew that they had to attack them back. McClellan led his troops to where Lee attacked in Sharpsburg, Maryland and ended Lee's attack.
    Effect: Over 23,000 died. Antietam is the battle with the most American casualties in US history. The battle was just one day long. After the battle, Lincoln passed the EP. The EP stated that all slaves in the south where free, but slaves in the North weren't so they wdn't secede.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Cause: The cause of the EP is the Battle of Antietam. Abe Lincoln now knew that the war was going to be very bloody and that he needed more troops. After the most deaths on American soil in the history of the nation Abe knew that this would be a long war and that he needed the men so they could keep fighting.
    Effect: The EP stated that all slaves in the Confederate states were free, but all the slaves in the Union were not free, so the states wdn't secede. Now the war was about ending slavery.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Cause: Union forces and Rebels meet up in accidentally in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Rebels were coming off of a huge win at Chancellorsville and went to Penn for a another attack with confidence.
    Effect: The first day the rebels got the town. The Union dug trenches in the hill and set up base. Rebs charged and got wrecked. Tried to attack again but got wrecked again. Lee could of saved many lives if he hadn't attacked. After the war, the Union now felt that they were in control of the war
  • General Sherman's March to the Sea

    Cause:General Grant called for a total war. This is when you burn or destroy anything that could be helpful to the Confederates. So, Sherman and his army marched from Atlanta to the Atlantic burning everything. Grant also just wanted to end the war as soon as possible.
    Effect: The total war strategy turned out to be very successful, but many Northerns didn't support the idea. Lincoln had Grant's back. The strategy also killed many of people and now the Confederates could only wish to win the war
  • Lee Surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse

    Cause: total war had forced the South to sign a document saying they lost the war not treaty or anything just the they lost.
    Event: North and South representatives came and the south stated that they lost the war.
    Effect: the war was now over but both sides had negative effects. The North started off low but in a pretty short amount of time they were back in the booming days. on the other hand the south had a very hard time recovering due to banks being destroyed and loans not being paid back.
