    Abe Lincoln was elecected the 16th president of the United States over a Democratic Party. Lincoln recieved only 40 percent of popular votes. Lincoln faced Douglas, who represented the Northern Democratic Party.
    This was important because he maintained a moderate stance on the emancipation of slaves.

    Under General Hooker, the Union defeated Lee's smaller forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson is wounded by his own soldiers. The Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing out of 130,000.
