Abe Lincoln Elected President
Abe Lincoln was elecected the 16th president of the United States over a Democratic Party. Lincoln recieved only 40 percent of popular votes. Lincoln faced Douglas, who represented the Northern Democratic Party.
This was important because he maintained a moderate stance on the emancipation of slaves.

Civil War Begins
Under the leadership of Pierre Beauregard, the confederates open fire on Fort Sumter. They opened fire with 50 cannons. Fort Sumter is in Charleston, South Carolina.
This even tis important because is is what started the Civil War.

Robert E. Lee Resigns Commision
Robert E. Lee resigns his commision in the United States Army. He said, "I cannot raise my hand agaisnt my birthplace, my home, my children." Then Lee went to Richmond, Virginia, and offered command of the military and naval forces and accepts.

Defeat At Bull Run
Union Army under General Irvin McDowell gets defeated at Bull Run 25 miles southwest of Washington. Thomas J. Jackson gets the nickname "Stonewall" . Union troops fall back to Washington.

Defeat At Fredericksburg
Potomac Army under General Burnside suffers defeat at Fredericksburg in Virginia. Loss of 12,653 men after 14 frontal assaults. The Confederate losses are 5,309.

President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves held by Confederates. Emphasizes the enlisting of black soldiers in the Union Army. War to preserve the Union becoms a struggle for a abolation of slavery. -
Chancellorsville
Under General Hooker, the Union defeated Lee's smaller forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson is wounded by his own soldiers. The Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing out of 130,000.

Commander Of The Army
President Lincoln appointed George G. Meade as commander of the Amry of the Potomac. When he did this, he replaces Hooker. Meade is the 5th man to command the Army.

Last Confederate Stronghold
Vicksburg, the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River surrendered. They surrendered to General Grant and the Amry of the West after a 6 week attack. The Union was then in control and the Confederacy split in two.

Rebel Seige of Vhattanooga
The rebel siege of Chattanooga ends as Union forces under Grant. During the battle, the most dramatic moment of the war occurs. Yelling "Chickamauga!" Union troops avenge their defeat by storming up the Missionary Ridge.

Grant's Forces Begin An Advance
Grant's forces begin a general advance and break through Lee's lines at Petersburg. General Ambrose P. Hill, a confederate, is killed. Lee then evacuates Petersburg.

The Stars and Stripes is ceremoniously raised over Fort Sumter. Lincoln and his wife Mary see the play "Our American Cousin" in Fords Theater. During the 3rd act at 10:13 p.m. John Wilkes Booth shoots the president in the head.
