    Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis were for either of them to become the next president. Some slave states said they would leave the union if Lincoln became president because he wanted to get rid of slavery. Lincoln did win and the slave states did leave the union. The first thing that officially started the civil war was south's attack on fort sumter.

    Lincoln chose a new general named Grant because he would be able to defeat general lee. He had a friend named Sherman who he sent to the south because it was part of his plan. Grant's plan was called total war. Total war was attacking anyone and anything that was related to the enemy. He destroyed many railroads, cornfields, and factories.

    Lincoln decided there could be an election. He believed he wouldn't win but still went up. He ended up winning and knew he had to end the war. He passed the 13 amendment where slaves would be free but if put in jail their punishment would be slavery. He also ended the war.

    General Lee and Grant met at the Appomattox court house so the South would surrender. Lee did surrender and the union was back together.
