  • Anaconda Plan

    The Anaconda Plan was a strategy created by Union General Winfield Scott in 1861, early on in the Civil War. It called for strangling the Southern Confederacy, much like an Anaconda
  • Contrabands

    determined that the US would no longer return escaped slaves who went to Union lines and classified them as "contraband of war", or captured enemy property.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the States did not return to the Union by January 1, 1863. In addition, under this proclamation, freedom would only come to the slaves if the Union won the war. By the President of the United States of America: A Proclamation.
  • MORRILL LAND GRANT COLLEGE ACT

    the Morrill Act provided each state with 30,000 acres of Federal land for each member in their Congressional delegation.
  • HOMESTEAD ACT

    provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land.
  • BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

    Over 23,000 men fell as casualties in the one-day Battle of Antietam, making it the bloodiest day in American history
  • MILITIA ACT

    was legislation enacted by the 37th United States Congress during the American Civil War that allowed African-Americans to participate as war laborers and soldiers

    fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War.

    was the final major military action in the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War

    gained control of the party platform and inserted a plank calling the war a failure and advocating immediate peace negotiations

  • SHERMAN'S MARCH TO THE SEA

    Union General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of Sherman's March to the Sea was to frighten Georgia's civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause

    near the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant
