    When Lincoln was elected president it pushed the southern states to secede. They thought that he would abolish slavery and disrupt the southern way of life.

    After Lincoln's election, the southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia) felt even more threatened and they seceded from the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was elected as president of the CSA. They lost the war by surrendering.

    Just as with every new president, there were many death threats and plots directed to Abraham Lincoln during his election, and also supporters. His innaugural address was very important because we wasn't just speaking as a new president, but also as a leader of a country in a crisis.In the adress he promised not to give control of union forts. Such as Fort Sumpter.

    General Beauregard led an open fire Confederate attack on Union's Fort Sumpter in Charleston Harbor. The next day the Union surrendered, and the Civil War had began.

    TApril 6-7 the Confederate launched a surprise attack of Grant's forces in Tennessee, but due to weather and many reinforcements the Union won the Battle of Shiloh, and it was the bloodiest battle in U.S history at that time.

    THe 7 Days Battles took place June 26, 1862 – July 1, 1862 in Richmond Virginia.Fater all the savage fighting had ended, Lee had won, gained repect of The Confederacy, and his victory showed that the war was going to continue for much longer than they had initially thought.

    Ther Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, Gettysburg PA) is the biggest battle fought on U.S soil ever. There was 51,000 casualties in the war and after three days of intense fighting Lee finally surrendered and retreated. The Union had won. Shortly after this battle, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg adress which changed the purpose of the war.

    The Battle of Antietam tokk place at Sharpesburg, Maryland. It was the bloodiest day of the war, with 10,320 confederate casualties, and 1,550 Union casualties. Inthe end, there was no clear winner, but the Union took the title of victory. After the war, Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Generals Burnside verses General Lee in Fredricksburg Virginia. The Union wanted to gain control of Fredricksburg, but the confederacy managed to stop them from gaining that control, and won the war.

    From December 31 to January 2, 1863, General Rosecran, and General Bragg's armies fought head to head in Murphreesboro, Tennessee. The Union won in the end, and granted them a tactical advantage in the winter of the war.

    Soon after the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln issued a pre- Emancipation Proclamation that said that by January 1, 1863, all slaves in the rebeling states shall be free then, and forevermore. However, it did not free all the slaves. Only those in the Rebel states were freed.

    The Union attacked Confederate forces from May 18- July 4, 1863 to try and divide the Confederate forces near the Mississippi River in Mississippi. 200,000 men fought in the battle, and the Union won, but just barely, due to their superior numbers. From that they gained control of the Mississippi River which was a vital transportation route.

    September 19-20, 1863 Catoosa County and Walker County , Georgia. Confederates had the advantages of surrounding Union and the Union had poor planning. The Union didnt get the city.

    Hamilton County and City of Chattanooga , Tennessee. The Union lost the battle due to South advantage, and they were running very low on supplies. The Confederates kept control of Chatanooga.

    May 5-7, 1864 in dense forests known as the Wilderness of Spotsylvania, the Union and the Confederate fought for two days, at a stalemate. In the end, the Union pushed forward. It was a big victory for Grant, and his men believed that they finally found a great general who would lead the to victory.

    This battle was fought from May 8- 21,1864 in Spotsylvania County Virginia over the Spotsylvania Court house. After some of the feircest fighting of the Civil War, there was still no clear winner, but it is seen as a Confederate victory. The movement continued onward.

    The Battle of Franklin happened in Frankiln, Tennessee at about five in the evening. It is said to be the bloodiest five hours of the entire Civil War. The Confederate charged the Union lines, but the Union held their ground, and eventually won. There was around two thousand deaths in just a couple hours.

    After Lincoln was reelected to be president he gave his 2nd Innaugural Adress, and what was said wss very different than the first address. He spoke with a sad calmness, and instead of inacting revenge and cruel spirits, he focused on healing and forgiveness. He was not vengeful.

    John Wilkes Booth, famed actor and known confederate supporter, shot President Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. Lincoln died the next morning. After his death his Vice President Johnson became the president. He suppoprted Lincolns views on Reconstruciton, but did not want political, or social equality for them.

    During the battle, Lee saw that his defeat was inevitable, so instead of destroyung what he had, he surrendered the battle. Although, it was not the official end to the Civil War, it was seen as that for the time being. Others would fall in Lee's path. It began the reunificaiton of the Union.

The confederates won with 13,303 casualties, while the Union had 17,197. It was known as General Lee's perfect battle becasue of his effected battle tactics.
