    President Lincoln sends a ship to resupply the federal fort.Believing the ship had troops and weapons, the Confederacy fired on the fort. Due to the attack on the fort, Lincoln calls up 75,000 troops and some of the border states, such as Virginia, secede.
  • First Bull Run

    First Bull Run
    The battle of First Bull Run was fought in Fairfax Virginia on July 21, 1861. After the smoke of guns cleared, 2,896 Union Soldiers lay dead along with 1,982 Confederate Soldiers. The battle was won by the Confederate army who proved to the North that the war would last longer than they anticipated.

    February 11, 1862 to February 16, 1862
    The battle was a huge victory for Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, but a major downfall for the South. With the Union victory, this made sure that Kentucky would remain in the Union control. The confederates lost a devistating number of 15,067 men.
  • Battle of Hampton Roads

    Battle of Hampton Roads
    The Battle of Hampton Roads is notably one of the most important naval battles during the Civil War. The Battle sprung because of an attempt by the South to detroy the Northern blockade. However, the results of the battle were inconclusive. Hampton Roads ended on March 9, 1862 with 261 Union Casualties and 78 Confederate casualties.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    The Battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6, 1862 in Hardin Country, Tennessee. Ulysses S. Grant led the Northern Troops up through the Tennessee river to surprise attack the South. On April 7, 1862 the Union had managed to defeat the Southern troops and continue up the river. The Union lost 13,047 men and the South lost 10,669 men.
  • Battle of Seven Pines

    Battle of Seven Pines
    May 31, 1862 to June 1, 1862
    Confederate Gen. Joseph E, Johnston attempted to overwhelm two union corps that wer south of the Chickahominy River. Both sides claimed victory and there was an overall total of 13,736 casualties. Johnston was seriously injured and bigadier Robert H. Hatton was killed in battle.
  • Seven Days Campaign

    Seven Days Campaign
    June 25, 1862 to July 1, 1862
    Fought in Virginia and contained six different battles along Richmond, there were around 35,500 casualties between the two sides. Though Gen. George B. McClellan struck first for the Union to secure access to the Richmond and York River Railroad, Gen. Robert E. Lee awarded the South a victory. Lee joined forces with Gen. Thomas J. Jackson to insure a strong and stable army.
  • Second Battle of Bull Run

    Second Battle of Bull Run
    August 28, 1862 to August 30, 1862
    Gen. Rovert E. Lee and Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson crused and drove back Maj. Gen. John Pope's Union army, earning the Confederates a victory. Pope's troops retreated to Centerville with Lee's army in tow. This would become known as the decisive battle of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

    October 3, 1862 to October 4, 1862
    The Rebels hoped to seize Corinth and then continue to sweep into Tennessee. Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn commanded his Confederate troops to move against the Union's forces, costing him his life and battle loss. Even though the battle lasted for two days, there were around 7,000 deaths between the two armies.
  • Fredericksburg

    Fredericksburg
    The first day of the Battle of Fredericksburg was December 11, 1862. The Union soldiers were led by General Ambrose Burnside and the Condferderates were led by General Robert E. Lee. Only 5,377 Confederate soldiers died in the battle with 12,653 Union Soldiers. The battle ended on December 15, 1862 with a confederate victory.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    The Battler of Chancellorsville was fought near Spotslyvania County, Virginia. The battle lasted for 7 days and ended on May 6, 1863. Due to the drawn out fighting of the battle, the Union was at 17,197 total men lost and the Confederates had totaled up 13,303 total men lost. At the end of the long battle the Confederates had come up with the final victory.
  • Port Hudson

    Port Hudson
    May 21, 1863 to July 9, 1863
    Union Gen. Nathaniel P. Bank's army moved against the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson. With the battle lasting 48 days, the estimated casualities were around 12,000 soliders. The seige was a Union victory.
  • Chattanooga

    Chattanooga
    November 23, 1863 to Novemeber 25, 1863
    Gen. William T. Sherman and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant led Union troops to a victory after their supplies were cut off by the Confederates. They were able to seige the "Gateway to the Lower South." There was a total of 12,485 casualities within the three day time span.
