    Lincoln Elected
    ~Lincoln was president from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865. He was assassinated ending his presidency. He was president at the time of the Civil War and he also fought in the War for a short period of time.
    ~When he was elected it was a sign to the South that slavery was going to be destroyed of taken down by a big number.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    ~On April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina. The Confederates shot 3,000 bullets at the fort while waiting for a surrender.
    ~It was the first battle of the war.
  • Lincoln orders blockade of the South

     Lincoln orders blockade of the South
    ~Part of the Anaconda plan was to close off 3,500 miles of Confederate coasts, which held 12 major ports.
    ~It was a way to get the Confederates taken care of for a while during the war so that would surrender.
  • 1st Battle of Bull Run

    ~North adavanced to the South. They were sucessful only at first before they were reinforced the South eventually won.
    ~It was a major wake up call to the North, and it was an idecation that the war would be going on for a really long time and would be really vilolent.
  • Monitor vs. Virginian

    Monitor vs. Virginian
    ~In an attempt to reduce the North's great naval advantage, Confederate engineers converted a scuttled Union frigate, the U.S.S. Merrimac, into an iron-sided vessel rechristened the C.S.S. Virginia. Monitor fought the Virginia to a close end, but not before the Virginia had sunk two wooden Union warships off Norfolk, Virginia.
    ~The battle marked the death knell for wooden ships in the naval services of the world.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh
    ~Confederate forces attacked Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. When the day was nearly over federal troops were close to being fully defeated. But when reinforcements came over night.
    ~It was a major Union viictory in the West and it was a very proud victory.
  • 7 Days Campaign

    7 Days Campaign
    ~McCllelan's forces advanced to within 15 miles of Richmond. Lee's forces attacked Union forces at Mechanicsville. The Union ended up winning.
    ~The battle was to rid the Richmond area of a large union force, threatening from the peninisula near the confluence of the James and York rivers.
  • 2nd Bull Run

    2nd Bull Run
    ~In order to draw Pope’s army into battle, Jackson ordered an attack on a Federal column that was passing across his front on the Warrenton Turnpike on August 28. The fighting at Brawner Farm lasted several hours and resulted in a stalemate. Pope became convinced that he had trapped Jackson and concentrated the bulk of his army against him.
    ~It was the last of Robert E. Lee's great attack strings in Summer of 1862 that brought the British close to itaking over on the side of the South.

    ~Confederate forces were caught by General McClellan Union general. This was the one of bloodiest battles during the time of the war. 2,108 Union soldiers were killed and 9,549 wounded -- 2,700 Confederates were killed and 9,029 wounded.
    ~It is the single deadliest battle every fought by any American army. The death toll was fully counted.

    An executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War using his war powers.
  • Emancipation take Effect

    Emancipation take Effect
    ~In 1861, Congress had passed an act stating that all slaves employed against the Union were to be considered free. In 1862, another act stated that all slaves of men who supported the Confederacy were to be considered free. Lincoln, aware of the public's growing support of abolition, issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring that all slaves in areas still in rebellion were, in the eyes of the federal government, free.
    ~It freed all states that were still in rebellion.

    ~Was to try and get back the control of Mississippi
    ~It split the Confederacy in 2.
  • Chancellorsville

    Chancellorsville
    ~Union General Hooker crossed the Rappahannock River to attack General Lee's forces. Lee split his army, attacking a surprised Union army in three places and almost completely defeating them.
    ~ Lee's most brilliant display of tactical genius.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    A chance encounter between Union and Confederate forces began the Battle of Gettysburg. Meade won the battle, with a greater number of defense, but he didn't follow Lee as he retreated back to Virginia.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    ~The speech Lincoln gave at the end of the battle at Gettysburg.
    ~Lincoln deidicated part of the Battlefield as a national cemetary.
  • Chattanooga

    Chattanooga
    ~The battle lasted until Nov. 25. Union forces pushed Confederate troops out of Chattanooga.

    ~The victory set the stage for Shermans capture of Atlanta.
  • Grant takes over

    Grant takes over
    ~He was promoted to commander of all Union troops. Planning to end war in one year.

    ~He pushed the troops to fight harder so that they could end the war.

    Atlanta
    ~General Sherman attacked General Johnstons force that were almost twice the size until he was replaced by General Hood who surrenerned to Sherman.
    ~It favored Lincolns relelction.
  • Lincoln Re-elected

    Lincoln Re-elected
    ~The Republican party nominated President Abraham Lincoln as its presidential candidate, and Andrew Johnson for vice-president. The Democratic party chose General George B. McClellan for president, and George Pendleton for vice-president. Eventually Lincoln won.
    ~It was the first reelection after the Civil War
  • March to Sea

    March to Sea
    ~The campaign began with Sherman's troops leaving the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia. They ended up with the capture of the port of Savannah on December 21.

    ~Sherman intended to bring the war to the civilians and destroy their will to fight.
  • Savannah Falls

    Savannah Falls
    ~Sherman's Union army has captured Savannah, Georgia. By then they had created an army barrier that streached all the way from east to west across the South area, this caused the Confederates to have problems with attempts to move men and supplies.
    ~Sherman took over finally.
  • 13th Amedment

    13th Amedment
    ~It says that having a slave or servant is illegal unless they're serving a punishment in the U.S.
    ~It got rid of slavery.
  • Occupy Richmond

    Occupy Richmond
    ~General Lee attacked General Grant's forces near Petersburg, but was defeated. On April 2, Lee left Richmond, the Confederate capital, and went west to try to join with other army forces.
    ~General Lee actually relized he could ask for help in the war.
  • Lee Surrenders

    Lee Surrenders
    ~General Lee's troops were soon surrounded, and on April 7, Grant called upon Lee to surrender. They meet and Lee decided to surrender.
    ~The war was almost over since Lee surrendered.
  • Lincoln Shot

    Lincoln Shot
    ~President Lincoln was watching a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., he was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor from Maryland obsessed with avenging the Confederate defeat. Lincoln died the next morning.
    ~It extinguished the mood of reconciliation which followed the news of War and killing, and caused a wave of bitterness in the North against the South.
