First Battle of Bull Run
No one was convinced that the Civil War had begun yet, but this battle changed that. The Union general was Irvin McDowell. The Southern General was Pierre Beauregard, and Thomas J. Jackson became known as "Stonewall Jackson," because he stopped p the Union troops. The Northern troops had to retreat, and the Confederates won the first battle. This battle said the fighting would be bloody, the war would not be over soon, and the Southern soldiers would fight fiercly to defend the Confederacy. -

Battle of Fort Donelson and Fort Henry
The Battle of Fort Donelson followed up Fort Henry on February 11, 1862 and ended February 16, 1862. The Northern generals were Ulysses S. Grant and John Pope. The Confederate General was Lloyd Tilghman. The North was victorious this time, and won both of the battles. This gave them a great advantage. It opened up a river highway, and allowed them to travel and ship goods easier. Also, it went right into teh heart of the South. The Northeners can now travel by river as far as northern Alabama. -
Battle of Shiloh
It was a major battle in the Civil War. The Southern general was Pierre Beauregard and the commander was Albert S. Johnston. The two Union generals were Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman. The Union was again victorious, and won again. This was the fiercest fighting the Civil War had seen yet. Thousands of men on both sides were lost. So many, that the North wanted Grant to be replaced. Lincoln didn't agree and said, "No, I need this man to fight." -
Battle of New Orleans
The Battle of New Orleans took place during the Civil War. Teh Northern general was David G. Farragut. The Confederate general was Mansfield Lovell. This battle was again won by the North. It was a heavy blow to the South. Mary Chestnut, the wife of President Jefferson Davis, of the Confederacy, once said, "New Orleans gone, and with it the Confederacy, are we not cut in two?" This was the North's plan, and they were well on their way to cut the South into two pieces. -
Seven Days' Battle
This battle started on June 25, 1862 and ended on July 1, 1862, hence it's name, Seven Days. This battle was a victory of Robert E. Lee, the general of the South. George McClellan, of the Union, had prepared his men well, but moved slowly. The North had to retreat, and the Union's plan to capture Richmond had failed. Lots of men died in this long battle. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
This battle lasted from August 28, 1862 to August 30, 1862. The Northern general was John Pope. Again, Robert E. Lee lead the Confederacy to a win. Because they won, they ended teh Union threat in Virgina. These victories renewed teh Confederate hopes of winning the war. The victories were very welcome new to the Southern people and states. -
Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was a major battle that was fought on the Union soil. The Confederate general was Robert E. Lee and the North general was George McClellan. The winner of this battle is inconclusive, but in record, the North won. It was one of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War yet. Hundreds of thousands of men died. Lee retreated to Virginia, giving McClellan an advantage and he didn't take it. For that, Lincoln fired him out of office. McClellan acted too slowly.
