The 1st Battle of Bull Run is fought. Confederates were driven back to Henry Hill. There, they made the Union forces retreat back to Washington after a crazy battle.

Compensation was given to slave owners. This was the start of the end of slavery. Washington DC was free.

Lee became the general of the Army of Northern Virginia. McClellan thinks he will be weak.

McClellan attacked Confederate forces, but didn't do a good job. The Union later got reinforcements and started winning. He didn't want to take out the Confederates because he thought they would destroy his army. The Confederate Army was extremely weak and barely survived the fight.

Abraham Lincoln issues this. It frees all African Americans and lets them become part of the Union Army. It was a huge step toward Union victory.

Ulysses S Grant's forces lay siege to Vicksburg. They keep them without any supplies for almost a month. Pemberton surrendered the city on July 4th.

This is possibly Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech. It is about the soldiers that died in the Battle of Gettysburg not dying in vain. The ground is hallowed and all the dead that rest there must be honored. It said that we must not let this was end without resolution.

Abe Lincoln appointed Grant to this position for all armies. Sherman took over in the West. Grant's main goal was to take out General Lee.

Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election of 1864 against his old general, George McClellan.

General Sherman captured Savannah. The Confederates abandoned the city on December 22nd. This was a Christmas gift from Sherman to Lincoln.

Congress approved Amendment 13 which stated that slavery would be abolished. It was submitted for ratification.

Union troops had just beat the Confederates. Grant wanted Lee to surrender. Grant was very generous and eventually surrendered at Appomatix Courthouse.

John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln in the head while he is watching a play. Lincoln dies the next morning.
