13th Amendment
Abolished slavery from the united states. Freed slaves from owners, but rights were still not given (African Americans) -
14th Amendment
Rights of citizenship, due process of law, and equal protection of the law. The 14th amendment has become one of the most used amendments in court to date regarding the equal protection clause. (All Groups) -
15th Amendment
The right to vote shall not be denied based on race or color. Men of all color got the right to vote, but women still couldn’t (African American Men) -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Separate but equal. Court ruled that it was not unconstitutional to separate facilities based on race as long as they were equal for both. (African American) -
NAACP created
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Founded by W. E. B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells, created to advance justice for African Americans (African American) -
19th Amendment
The right to vote shall not be denied based on sex. Women finally got the right to vote (Women) -
Brown v. Board of Education
Case overturned the original plessy v Ferguson case.Stated that it was unconstitutional to have separate facilities based on race. (African American) -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
A boycott of the Montgomery Bus company. Citizens protested for the segregation on public transport to end. Resulted in the end of segregated public transportation. (African American) -
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) formed
Founded by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., it was in close coordination to promote the equality of African American citizens. (African American) -
Little Rock 9
9 African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central highschool but were prevented from entering the segregated area by the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, Challenged segregation in schooling and promoted more people to do the same (African American) -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
Created the Civil Rights section of the Justice Department, commissioned civil rights violations to be investigated. (All Groups) -
Chicano Movement (Mural Movement)
A movement in the south in the 60's, inspired by protest and resistance of prior Mexican activists. Led to the creation of bilingual and bicultural programs, hiring Chicano teachers, and more Mexican Americans serving as elected officials (People of Mexican/Chicano decent) -
Freedom Riders
Civil rights activists who rode around the United States in interstate buses to challenge the unenforced segregation laws in the South. (African American) -
Cesar Chavez
A civil rights leader and social activist that co-founded NFWA and worked to achieve better lives for farmers using non violent tactics. (Mexican Americans) -
Dr. King’s: “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”
Written while Martin Luther King was spending time in jail to defend the acts of the Birmingham protests. Resulted in increased support of the civil rights movement (African Americans) -
March on Washington: “I have a dream” speech
Was a speech that was influential in civil rights activism.Martin luther king delivered this speech next to the washington monument which then launched civil rights activism into the national spotlight. (African American) -
24th Amendment
Rights for citizens of any race to vote in any election was granted. It resulted in the banning of the poll tax (All groups) -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Abolished the use of voter registration or literacy requirement to discriminate against any voter (All Groups) -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Banned literacy tests in counties where over half the eligible voters had been disenfranchised (All groups) -
MLK assassinated
On Thursday April 4th 1968,Martin Luther King was shot and killed while standing on his balcony outside his 2nd story room at the Lorraine hotel. (African Americans)
