Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri from 1833 to 1843. He resided in Illinois for a portion of time, which was a free state. But he was brought back to Missouri and made a slave once more. He then brought it to the Courts again and they ruled that he wasn't a citizen so he couldn't sue in the US courts

The 13th Amendment was created to abolish slavery. It says that no person should be enslaved unless it's a punishment for a crime that was duly convicted. It was the legal way of ending slavery.
