What was it: Enslaved black man sues court because he was taken into a free place and should be free.
Impact: More blacks spoke up. -
Emancipation Proclamation
What was it: Freed all slaves
Impact: Helped black people and angered whites. -
13th Amendment
What was it: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Impact: Abolished slavery -
14th Amendment
What was it: national citizenship and forbidding the states to restrict the basic rights of citizens or other persons.
Impact: Granted citizenship to the enslaved. -
15th Amendment
What was it: prohibits the federal government and each state from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude".
Impact: Granted blacks voting rights. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
What was it: It upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in quality – a doctrine that came to be known as "separate but equal".
Impact: Allowed for segregation, but only judged by opinion and circumstance. -
Creation of the NAACP
What was it: civil rights organization, formed in 1909 as a biracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans
Impact: Became popular and helped respond to the violence against African- Americans -
19th Amendment
What was it: prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
Impact: Women were then allowed to vote. -
Jackie Robinson breaks the color barrier
What was it: Is accepted into the Major Leagues.
Impact: Opens doors for other black people. -
Brown vs The Topeka Board of Education
What was it: Girl tries to go to an all white school.
Impact: She is discriminated against, but opens doors for many students down the road. -
The Montgomery Bus Boycott
What was it: A protest of segregation on transportation.
Impact: Made segregation on public buses unconstitutional. -
Little Rock Nine
What was it: Group of African-Americans that were the first to enroll in an all white school.
Impact: Allowed for more students of color to get their education. -
“I Have a Dream” Speech
What was it: Martin Luther King speaking on equality.
Impact: He influenced many protests and boycotts. -
The March on Washington
What was it: Protest to advocate for civil rights
Impact: Pushed Kennedy to initiate a strong civil rights bill. -
Freedom Summer
What was it: Volunteer campaign to register as many African- American voters as possible.
Impact: Drew attention to the oppression of black people. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
What was it: Ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin

Voting Rights Act of 1965
What was it: outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting.

Selma, Alabama Marches
What was it: thousands of nonviolent demonstrators march to the steps of the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama in protest.
Impact: They were attacked with clubs and tear gas and ran back into Selma -

What was it: amendment to give equal rights to American Citizens, regardless of gender.
Impact: Gave women more opportunities. -
Title IX
What was it: : "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Impact: Helped people, regardless of color, get the education and financial assistance. -
Roe vs Wade
What was it: Passed law to make abortion legal in many circumstances
Impact: Helped give mothers more of the ability to choose.
