    President Lincoln sends a ship to resupply the federal fort. Believing the ship had troops and weapons, the Confederacy fired on the fort.
    Due to the attack on the fort, Lincoln calls up 75,000 troops
    Some of the border states, such as Virginia, secede.
  • First Bull Run

    July 21, 1861
    McDowell's Union force struck on July 21, shelling the enemy across Bull Run while more troops crossed the river at Sudley Ford in an attempt to hit the Confederate left flank. McDowell then commanded 35,000 Union volunteer troops to gather in the Federal capital. His force struck on July 21st 1861 and it only lasted 1 day so it ended on July 21st also.
  • Hampton Roads

    It was the probably the most important naval battle of the American Civil War from the view of the navies. It was fought over two days, March 8–9, 1862 at the Hampton Roads. The battle was a part of the effort of the Confederacy to break the Union blockade, which had cut off Virginia's largest cities, Norfolk and Richmond.

  • Battle of Antietam

    Generals Robert E. Lee and George McClellan battled it out near Antietam creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland, in the first battle of the Civil War to be fought on northern territory. Though the result of the battle was inconclusive, it remains the bloodiest war in a single day in American history, with more than 22,000 casualties.

    By the time darkness fell, there had been no change. The Union had suffered nearly 13,000 casualties; most of the causalities came from Marye's Heights. On the other hand, Confederates had fewer than 5,000. So I would say confederates won.

    Lee parried at his rear by the 27,000 troops Hooker had left behind. On May 6, Hooker passed the Rappahannock, already having 17,278 casualties to Lee's 12,826 casualties, including Jackson. Lee now possessed the strategic initiative, which in a few weeks would lead him north to Gettysburg.

    Union forces waged a campaign to take the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

    On May 18 Grant arrived in the rear of Vicksburg, within which Pemberton's 30,000 troops were isolated. By early June, the Confederate garrison was desperately short of ammunition and on the brink of starvation. The surrender of Vicksburg marked the turning point of the war.

    Union casualties were around 23,000, while the Confederates had 28,000 casualties which is more than 1/3 of Lee’s army. The north was happy because they won but on the other hand the south was sad because they lost. This is one of the most know battles in history.

    Confederate troops on the first day attacked the union left. The Union held but with extreme losses on both sides. Union reenforcements arrived so Bragg split his army into two wings. The confederates broke through the union line. Union reinforccements won the the battle.
  • Wilderness

    May 5 to May 6 -After a day of fighting Grant got more troops to attack Lees right wing.With a union charge line over a mile long they were able to push backs the confederates nearly a mile. With a hard push the confederates were able to break though on the union right. But Grant restabled his ranks. Lees was able to win this fight. Union loses totaling at 17,000 and Confederate loses at only 10,000.
  • Spotsylvania

    May 8 to May 21 -This was one of the most bloodist battle of the war both sideS lossing a total of 29,000 troops. Grants surpise attack on May 18 but failed. Grant repelled several attacks and then realized that they could not take any ground so he disengaged his army.
  • Sherman's March

    November 15 to December 21 -After captureing Alanta ,which was a huge union victory, sherman marched to Savannah. But when he got there everyone lefts so he gave 25,000 bales of cotton to Lincoln as a christmas gift.
  • Petersburgh

    Grant's attacks won him the city and leaving Lee with 50,000 troop compared to Grants 120,000. Grant later crushed Pickett and Lee at Five Forks battle.
  • Lincon's assasination

    Booth got away. The doctor took Lincoln across the street. He said the Lincoln would die sometime in the night. The word of the assassination swept across the nation and people had their flags at half-mast.
