Biafran surrenders. More than one million people died in 30 months of war. Gowon says "no victor, no vanquished" and declares a system of reproduction and rehabilitation.This was all following three years of unsafe fighting. On January 11, Nigerian powers strengths took the capital of Owerri, one of the last Biafran fortifications, and Ojukwu was forced to escape to the Ivory Coast.
