    The Silk Road

    Began at 206 BCE, it began the trade between countries and it also inspired the beginning of the Han Dynasty
  • Jan 1, 1200

    Mongol Conquest

    It began around 1200 CE. Ghengis Khan was the succesor to Kubilai Khan and began to expand his empire. He did so cruelly and with force demanding loyalty. He also developed a body of law.
  • Jan 1, 1254

    Marco Polo

    Marco Polo had the fortune of being well like by the Great Khan. The Great Khan employed him and had him become an ambassador of sorts for Mongolia.
  • Jan 1, 1406

    Forbidden City

    The palace used from the Ming dynasty to the Qing dynasty. Located in Beijing. Served as the homes and households of emperors.
  • Qing Dynasty

    Began in 1644 and ended in 1912. It was preceded by the Ming Dynasaty. The Qing Dynasty was the last dynasty of China. The Repbulic of Chinas is the political group that formed afterwards.
  • The Opium Wars

    Composed of two different wars. The first beginning in 1839 to 1842, and the second from 1856 to 1860. They were the climax of disputes over trade and diplomatic relations with Britain. The British East India company heavily invested in China for opium. The emperor was outraged because there were an increase in addicts as well as a drain of silver from him country.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Began in 1898 to 1901. It was a pro nationalist movement by the "RIghteous Harmony Society" which oposed imperialism and Christianity.
  • Open Door Policy

    Allows multiple imperial powers to cross into China without having any control in the country. Due to the Opium Wars
  • Revolution of 1911

    Starting in October, within two months the revolution was over, ending the Quing dynasty. The people did not like the ruling government and agreed that they had to do away with completley the old government. Yuan the military leader became the next ruler of China.
  • Mao Tse-Tung & CCP

    The CCP was established by Mao in 1921. The Chinese Communist Party fought a war against the nationalist party. In 1949 Mao established the Peoples Republic of China.
  • Chiang Kai-Shek & Kuomintang

    Chiang took over the nationalist party for Sun when he died in 1925. Chiang caused a split in the party and had a war with the Kuomintang party.
  • Long March

    Mao's 6,000 mile retreat from Chaing's forces. He built a rural base and a party that was loyal to him.
  • Japanese Invasion/Occupation

    Japan invaded China. China was helped by the Soviet Union, Germnay, and America. This evolved into World War 2. Japan surrendered in 1945.
  • Peoples Republic of China & The Republic of China

    PRC was established in 1949 and the Republic of China was established in 1912. PRC is communist while the Republic of China is not.
  • Great Leap Forward

    Mao attempted to modernize China so it would have a more profitable economy.
  • Cultural Revolution

    Attempted by Mao to remove any counter revolutionary elements in China.
  • Deng Xiaoping

    Paramount leader of the PRC from 1978 to 1992. Tried to move China towards a market economy.
  • Tiananmen Square Incident (1989)

    Mass protests specifically by the students of the nation over grievances over inflation, limited career prospects for students, and corruption of the party elite. Evolved into a mass movement for political reform.
  • Hong Kong

    Returned to China in 1997.
