  • The fourth reactor exploded

    The fourth reactor exploded
    The explosion was a total accident. A test was being conducted to see if the reactor was capable of creating a clean energy source. But instead it exploded and radioactive material was sprayed into the air.
  • Evacuations

    Two days after the explosion the government ordered an evac and sent around 2000 buses to Pripyat. People were given 2 hours to pack clothes and grab any valuables. They were taken to neighboring countries in either Germany to France.
  • Trying to stop radiation

    Around 12 helicopters flew over reactor four to drop clay and sand on top of it. But the controls of the helicopters would fail and they crashed and only 3 of the pilots lived.
  • Radiation

    A fire brigade showed up immediately after the explosion to rid the fires. The first group that was there was apart of the power plant, The man leading it was Lieutenant Volodymyr Pravik, he died of acute radiation sickness and many of his men did as well.
  • Exposure

    The people of chernobyl were exposed to about 200 times more radiation than the atomic bombs exposed the people of Heroshima. Certain areas in Belarus are still today unfit to live in.
  • Aftermath of Reactor 4

    After the majority of the radiation went down around the reactor, it was time to do an evaluation of what went wrong. Lava like fuel material was found around it. It was then when they found things they could fix about reactor 1-3.

    The reactor was contained in a large concrete like dome.
