Texas joined the wagon in 1905 when the created the cheerleading state which was a group of males who lead crowds in cheers at football and basketball games. The males domminated cheerleading until the early 1920's.

    In the year of 1923 girls began to take over cheerleading when all the men left to fight in the war. Once the men left, tumbling and stunting were introduced to cheerleading. They also started creating props like pom-poms and megaphones.

    Lawrence Herkimer was the first person to invent cheerleading camps and clinics in the year of 1948. He also formed the NCA which is still a cheerleading company today. Herkimer invented the spirit stick and also the herkie jump.

    In the year of 1967 pee wee cheer teams were established. Any kid five and older could joined. The pee wee team aloud younger athletes to show off their skills. Most kids would cheer with this team all the way up to college and cheer in college.

    In the year of 1972 cheerleaders wanted to show off their skills in competitions and exhibitions. Cheerleading began to become more athletic. Harder stunts and tumbling were incorporated in.

    Allstar cheerleading started to form in the 1980s. All star cheer squads are for people who only want to compete and not cheer for a school team. All star teams were given different rules and guidelines then school teams. They were able to do more advanced skills.

    In the late 1970s through 1990 cheerleading went through a drastic change. Cheerleaders became athletes who were well rehearsed and had perfect skills. The basket toss was invented and used by many teams during this time. THe stunts and tumbling still had increasing difficulty.

    cheerleading today has become far more athletic then it once was. Competitive cheerleaders have the same amount of practice at other sports and its becoming harder to deny it isn't a sport. Today television shows and movies are now exposing the real competiveness of cheerleading. Today 90% of cheerleaders are female but 50% of college cheerleaders are males.
