    The Birth Of Charles Dickens
    Charles Dickens was born on February 7,1812 in Portsmouth,England to the parents of John Dickens and Elizabeth Barrow. His father, John Dickens, was a naval clerk, and his dream was to be "shrinking rich." His mother, Elizabeth Barrow, was a teacher and school director. When Charles was only 12, his father John went to jail. Charles's family was poor so he had no choice to leave school and work at a boot-blacking factory. This event is significant because Charles becomes a famous author(A+E 1).

    The War of 1812 was between the Americans and the Untied Kingdom(also known as Great Britain). The War Of 1812 had to do with economic issues and the British and French were trying to take down the Americans.There was a peace treaty signed called the Treaty Of Ghent signed in December, and it returned all the territorial takeovers made by the two sides. One thing it didn't state was about the issue of the impressment was(1 on the major causes of the war)(1812 1).

    While James Monroe was President, the Missouri Compromise took place. The Missouri Compromise was when Missouri was accepted to be a slave states and Maine was accepted to be a free state. Maine gave the right to vote and gave education to all male citizens. Compromise was off limits, slavery in the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase(Compromise 1).

    The Great Depression began with The Panic of 1837. The Panic Of 1837 dealt with finical problems. The Great Depression was the longest and deepest continuing economic decline in the Western Industrialized part of the world. After The Great Depression, the stock markets clatter with streets in panic and washed out investors(A+E Television Network 1).

    "A Dinner At A Popular Walk," was the first piece of writing for Charles Dickens. Mr.Dickens put the short story into an Old Monthly Magazine and made it anonymous. The reason Dickens made the story anonymous was because if the short story wasn't a hit, he didn't want people to know who made it. "A Dinner At A Popular Walk," made Charles career begin. If the short story wasn't a hit, none of his other novels,short stories or sketches would be recognized today(shampoo 1).

    Street Sketches/ Sketches by Boz
    When Dickens was writing "A Dinner At A Popular Walk," Morning Chroncile suggested he should make sketches. Charles published his first "street sketch" on vignettes life in London. In February, he started publishing sketches by Boz, a collection/series of writing pieces. Morning Chronicle editors help him make more "observational "pieces. Also, in February his second edition came out. Then,in August two more came out the next year! His sketches help him show people what more he can do(shmpoo 1).

    "Pickwick Papers" was known as Dickens liveliest/funniest books. Also, was known to be Mr.Dickens first "major work" (Immortals Of Literature 69-72,171-175)."Pickwick Papers" overlapped with "Oliver Twist," for nine months(Dickens info 1). In the end of March 1836, Dickens only made a few hundred copies of the "Pickwick Papers." Dickens wanted to make a story to make his fans/ people laugh and he accomplished that(Priestley 24,27,35,41-42).

    "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens is known to be one of his most famous books. The "Christmas Carol" is produced in plays today. The "Christmas Carol" was about a old man named Scrooge and Scrooge is reformed with ghosts, the ghosts change his behavioral problems toward his family and friends. Dickens wanted all types of people to read "Christmas Carol," from poor,to rich to business people. Dickens lesson was to bring families together as one(Immortals of Literature 69-72 ).

    "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens is known to be one of the sharpest, darkest books in 1838(Priestley 24,27,35,41-42). The reason Dickens decided to write "Oliver Twist" was to show the truths of Victorian England that everyone tried to ignore(Themes in Oliver Twist 1). Dickens wanted to infer a attack on the "bad" of the society. The message to "Oliver Twist' was trying to show that not everyones life is sweet some people are poor/ophran(Poor Law 1).

    The serial novel "Nicholas Nickleby," was highlighting the terrible conditions in schools for the children that didn't have a lot of money to begin their publication. In his serial novels, he wanted others to help the kids that were poor and those who were trying to begin their publication. Dickens wanted to show the issues for the "poor" kids and their publication problems.(Immortals of Literature 171-175).

    The War with Mexico was fought between the Americans and the Mexicans. This war was the first war that was fought over about foreign soil. Mexico lost the war and the Americans were victorious. The Mexicans ended up loosing one-third of there territory in the U.S. Today the states they lost are called California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico(A+E Television Network 1).

    "Hard Times" was one of Dickens shortest novels(Immortals of Literarure 69-72, 171-175). The novel was about the bad side of the Industrial Revolution. There were several bad effects on the Industrial Revolution, especially the people and the events in England(shmpoo 1). Charles Dickens message was to show the Industrial Revolution touch more peoples lives then anyone would ever imagine and he also showed how it effected the people of England.

    On June 9,1870 Charles Dickens died at the age of 58 with a stroke in Higham, Kent(United Kingdom). The author was in a train accident ahead of time and never exactly healed from it and he continue his tour and had a stroke on tour. This is significant because he caught many peoples eyes and was very loved(A+E Television Network).
