  • Darwin (22) Joined Captain FitzRoy on the HMS Beagle as the Ships Naturalist

  • Punta Alta, Argentina

    Darwin is in awe of the fossils that they see in Argentina.

  • Stops at Cape Verde Islands

    Darwin is amazed by his first few discoveries at the Islands.

  • HMS Beagle Crosses the Equator

  • Salvador, Brazil

    The Beagle stops at Salvador, and Darwin sees Brazilian rainforests for the first time

  • Galapagos Islands

    Darwin finds many species of animals on the Islands, and notices that they are related to the mainland species. He takes notes of the many tortoises, iguanas, and birds throughout the trip in the islands. He finds out later in England that all the birds he took notes of on the island were finches.

  • Chiloe Island, Chile

    While in Chile, Darwin experiences the eruption of Mount Osonro, along with the earthquakes, and other effects the eruption brought along with it. It left a lasting impact on him.

  • Sydney, Australia

    Now in Australia, Darwin wonders why the mammals in Sydney vary from the mammals in other places.

  • Cocos Islands

    Darwin studied coral reefs and other aquatic life to test his theory of atoll formation
