In 1831-1836 Charles Darwin took"The Voyage of the Beagle" to South America, and other continents to study the life of plants and animals. The voyage was actually a boat ride on the HMS Beagle. His findings inspired his writing on natural selection and evolution in the book "On the Origin of Species". During his travels he identified distinct patterns between specific animals' features.
  • Charles Darwin 1808-1882; EVOLUTION

Charles Darwin, who was a naturalist from Britain, created and defined evolution. He defined it as the idea that species change over time, give rise to new species, and share a common ancestor. In 1859, Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species", where he proposed that all species evolve, and all living things can trace to a common ancestor.

Charles Darwin created the mechanism which drove his theory of evolution. This mechanism was called "natural selection". Darwin's idea of natural selection explained how populations could evolve in that they became better suited in their environment over time.
