    H.M.S. Beagle's 5 Year Voyage

At the age of 22, Darwin accompanied Captain Robert Fitzroy on a 5 year expedition on the H.M.S. Beagle around the world working as a naturalist and a geologist. For the most part he studied plants, animals and geologic formations. His work led to him writing a book on the formation of coral reefs and one about his experience aboard the Beagle. It was during this time that he visited the Galapagos islands, which many people incorrectly believe led to the discovery of his most famous theory.
  • Theory Conception

Using the knowledge that he acquired throughout the expedition, as well as the influence of an essay by Thomas Malthus, Darwin came to the conclusion of the idea known today as "natural selection." He was able to view the Malthuism theory in relation to nature and use his expertise on animal populations to create his own theory. He later collaborated with Alfred Russell, a British naturalist, to present their joint work which served as the groundwork for future evolutionary studies.
  • Death

Charles Darwin died in Downe, Kent due to cardiac failure. He had suffered from many illnesses throughout his entire life. He was an established scientist, author and father at the time of his death with ideas that were generally accepted. His last words were to his wife, and he was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey.
