  • College

    Charles Darwin attended medical school in Edinburgh, Scotland but dropped out after 2 years. In 1828 he enrolled into Christ’s College at Cambridge University to become a clergyman. Charles quickly became friends with professors in fields of science such as botany, geology, and mineralogy. They are responsible for bringing him into a world of science that would enable him to create the theory of evolution, which he is known for today. Ruse, Michael. Charles Darwin.   • HMS Beagle

    Charles Darwin graduated from college and used his connections with the professors to travel around South America from 1831 – 1836 aboard the HMS Beagle. During the adventure, he studied many different animals and plants. He created an impressive collection and was became a professional scientist.   • Galapagos Islands

    Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands during his travels with the HMS Beagle. He particularly studies the birds and tortoises on these islands.   • Coming up with a theory

    Charles Darwin studied his collection further and began to theorize that the birds and animals from the Galapagos Islands had to have originated from the mainland, but changed or evolved as they moved from island to island. Ultimately, he came up with the reasoning for this was due to natural selection, or survival of the fittest.
