On his 5 year voyage with Robert Fitzroy, Darwin spent his time on land studying plants, animals, fossils and geological formations. He discovered large fossils of extinct creatures. By the end of the voyage, he started gaining respect as an eminent geologist.

Darwin wrote a detailed scientific field journal called "The Voyage of the Beagle" explaining his experiences and observations during his time on the voyage. Because of this journal, he gained popularity and solidified his credibility amongst the scientific community.

In it, he describes his theory on how populations evolve over long periods of time through adaptation, competition, and mutational diversity otherwise known as natural selection. This sparked various scientific, philosophical, and religious altercations amongst scientists.

Darwin created 6 different revised editions of Origin of Species. His data and observation continued positively proving his theory as time. He also rebutted many criticisms and skepticisms that were aimed at his theory.

After experiencing a heart attack on Christmas, he passed away at the Down House and was later buried in Westminster Abbey.
