Charles Darwin was born February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England.
-
Charles Darwin's father wanted him to become a Clergyman. Because of this, he felt that it was the right thing to do by asking for his permission to sail the H.M.S. Beagle to accompany Captain FitzRoy.
-
During the voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle, the crew traveled to Cape Verde, Patagonia, the Falkland Islands, Tierra del Fuego, Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Tasmania, the islands of Mauritius and Reunion, Brazil, and Portugal before returning to Falmouth, England. It was during this voyage that Charles Darwin, through his studies and observations, truly became a scientist and naturalist observer.
-
It was at this point that Charles Darwin began writing down his thoughts and ideas of the relationship and origins of species in a notebook.
-
His notebook spanned from multiple questions such as, "Why were some animals and plants found in one location but not in another, even though the distance between the two locations was not large? Why were the same types of animals and plants found in the same altitude but in completely different countries? Why were some varieties of species unique to islands separated by long distances from any continent?
-
Darwin began to write the book that would become "The Origin of Species." Darwin felt that with the knowledge he gained he needed to publish his theory, Darwin continued writing until he finished the manuscript on 10 May 1859. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVx4Z3W6U-Y
