Charles Darwin graduated Christ's college in 1831 with a bachelors degree in the arts. His mentor recommended Darwin for a naturalist’s position aboard the HMS Beagle, which would be a five year long voyage around the world. They began their voyage on December 27, 1831 and during this time he studied botany, geology and zoology. This trip caused Darwin to change the common naturalists view of the origin of living things and he came up with a revolutionary theory.

Between 1858 and 1859, after Darwin's voyage through the Gallapagos Islands, he came up with the theory of evolution. This theory states that "natural selection" caused species to adapt or evolve into the changes around or within their environment, and then the ones who could not evolve or change to the needs of the environment would die off. This theory later became known as "Darwinism". On November 24, 1859, he published this theory in On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

This theory was also referred to as "survival of the fittest". When natural selection changes species in small ways such as color or size throughout generations it is referred to as "microevolution." Natural selection causing big changes in species, as if creating whole new species altogether, it is referred to as "macroevolution." https://www.livescience.com/474-controversy-evolution-works.html?jwsource=cl

Darwin did not use the concept of Genetics to come up with his idea of natural selection. Physical and behavioral changes that happen over time eventually affect DNA and genes, which are called mutations. These can be caused by random errors just in DNA processes, and are more than likely harmful to the organism which it will kill it off. Mutations which are beneficial though are what changes the species over time and helps a species evolve if they reproduce with this mutation.
