Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

  • Voyage of the Beagle

    Voyage of the Beagle
Darwin was offered a position as a naturalist on one of the British Royal Navy’s survey ships the HMS Beagle. During this 5-year long trip Darwin sailed south from the British Isles to the Galapagos Islands. He visited many islands that had such a wide variety of wildlife that he has never seen before, he wrote all his experiences down. Darwin would collect plants, rocks, and fossils to take back home. This trip changed him into the scientist he is known as today.
  • Origin of Species

Darwin finally published his book “Origin of Species.” After his five year long voyage Darwin was full of thoughts about how animals came to be how they are now. Darwin was looking at all his drawings and notes of the creatures he saw. From that he realized that all animals share a similar structure. He proposed the theory of evolution. In his book, he goes on to describe what his theory is. All animals originate from a common ancestor.
  • The Descent of Man

    The Descent of Man
Darwin saved his thoughts on evolution on homo sapiens because he knew it would stir up controversy. But in this book, he decides to let out all of his ideas into the open. The book describes how humans are animals and share a common ancestor with apes. Darwin also talks in this book about “sexual selection.” This process describes that there are certain traits in either male or female that will make them more likely to be chosen as a mating partner.
  • Paradigm Shift

    Paradigm Shift
Charles Darwin’s’ theories were met with controversy. His ideas of evolution were accepted by many people, but they weren’t known as common sense by the majority of the public yet. It wasn’t until Ronald Fisher published his book, “The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection,” that evolution was accepted. With his background in genetics, biology, and many other things. He was able to create a stronger recognition of natural selection in the public.
