Charles Darwin leaves medical school and meets Captain Robert FitzRoy and he is given the opportunity to set out on a world voyage on the survey ship, HMS Beagle. After two false starts, the ship departs on 27 December 1831, with Darwin as the ship's naturalist. (The Galapagos) Charles Darwin 12 FEB 1809 - 19 APR 1882
Exploration of the Galapagos Archipelago is what Darwin is famously known for. It was in the Galapagos that Darwin first witnessed the effects of "evolution in isolation." This had an impact on his Theory of Natural Selection. This is where he studied the species that is now known as "Darwin's Finches." With help from an Ornithologist, he studied how the beaks of the birds had changed over time to better suit their environmental needs. (References located in assignment text box)

    (Coral reefs) Charles Darwin 12 FEB 1809 - 19 APR 1882
The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs is published to explain Darwin's theory on the formation of coral reefs. He built off of Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology, and theorized coral reefs could be explained "by uplift and subsidence of vast areas of the Earth's crust under the oceans." This theory is supported by modern investigations.

  • (Origin of Species) Charles Darwin 12 FEB 1809 - 19 APR 1882

Darwin publishes a detailed explanation of his theory of evolution titled, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Over time studies of DNA would provide scientific evidence to support his theory. Before Darwin's theory of evolution, many scientists believed that species did not noticeably change over time. https://youtu.be/mcY0fOWhwB8 “Charles Darwin.” Biography.com, A&E Networks Television, 19 June 2019, www.biography.com/scientist/charles-darwin.
