    Maurice Duplessis ruled from 1944-1959. He was old fashioned. He was a french Canadian and loved church values. He though the church was morally superior. He put Quebecs independence on the map. He brought electricity to the farms. He didn't like journalists, feminists, unions and intellectuals because they opposed the Duplessis government.

    Between 1946-1960, 135 000 infants are born on average a year in Quebec. Two factors: increase of immigration after the war and high birth rate. More than 30 000 immigrants arrived in the province. After World War II, 2 million babies were born, within the next 15 years. This is called the baby boom.

    The US and the Union of the Soviet Socialist (USSR) were allies against Germany during World War II. They had disagreements about political and ideological. During the Cold War the opponents never had direct conflict.

    Living and working conditions improved
    Wages increased while the number of working hours decreased. This gave Quebecers more time to do other activities. Credit becomes more accessible. People can purchase automobiles and home appliances.

    Indians can attend school with white Canadians
    Residential schools were beginning to fail. In the 50s and 60s new residential schools were opening up in Quebec. These ones were ran by the church but funded by the federal government. The church influenced what the kids were taught. In 1969, the government pulled funding. They became non religious.

    The government undertook a program of rural electrification. 90% of the farms had electricity by 1956. Farmers who wanted to buy new equipment were offered farm credit. Agricultural cooperatives became more important.

    4. mentality change about having children

    Quiet Revolution
    Also known as La Révolution Tranquille. Began in quebec. Began with the electoral defeat of the Union Nationale. Ran by Jean Lesage and his Liberal Party. It was a rapid process of social, economic and political reform. This was to weaken the influence of the Church and to end Quebec's political isolation.

    The pill is invented
    The pill was invented to moderate menstrual cycle. Birth control is illegal. This causes the population to decrease as its preventing babies from being born.
  • October Crisis

    October Crisis
    James Cross and Pierre Laporte were kidnapped by the FLQ. This causes the Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau to put in place the war measures act. He calls out the army and hundreds of members of the FLQ were arrested. Cross was released and Laporte's body was found in the trunk of a car.

    Law to protect farm land
    Investors buy and sell farm land making it too expensive for farmers to buy. Business or residence can't be built on farm land. It becomes illegal to cut down maple trees or remove organic matter. They can't divide lots and non residents can't buy farmland.
