In 1947, scientists at Bell Telephone Laboratories invented the first transistor, a tiny circuit device that amplifies, controls, and generates electrical signals. The transistor could do the work of a much larger vacuum tube, but took up less space and generated less heat. The transistor could be used in radios, computers, and other electronic devices, and greatly changed the electronics industry. Because of the transistor, giant machines that once filled whole rooms could now fit on a desk.

Whenever Eisenhower was president, him and the congress at the time added "Under God" to the pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer. After that was added, some people didn't agree with it.

Dr. Jonas Salk described the vaccine as "Safe, effective, and potent." He created the vaccine for polio and helped many other people. At first, it prevented 90% of all polio.

The Shippingport Atomic Power Station, "the world’s first full-scale atomic electric power plant devoted exclusively to peacetime uses." It also produced plutonium for military uses which was located near the present-day Beaver Valley Nuclear Generating Station on the Ohio River in Beaver County. Pennsylvania, USA, about 25 miles from Pittsburgh the reactor went online December 2, 1957.

On July 29th, 1958, Eisenhower signed the law that created NASA. When it first opened, it had only about 80 empolyees working in only 4 labs. Since NASA opened, it was a race between America and the Soviet Union to launch a rocket ship. -Olivia Dixon
