    Indian Settlement
    Way before Eurpoean Americans came into Utah, a great amount of people lived here. About A.D. 400, the Fremont Culture began to emerge in northern and eastern Utah.

    Navajos
    Indians in UtahThe Navajo Indians were the most recent immigrants to the Southwest part of Utah--they arrived sometime between A.D. 1300 and 1400. They were adaptive hunters and had livestock.

    By the year 1700 Navajos began to move into the San Juan River area of Utah. They were looking for pastures to their Spanish sheep and goats. They were friends with many tribes, but a large amount of Navajo Indians were pressured out of Utah because of the Ute Indians.

    In 1765, the earliest Europeans to visit Utah were Spanish explorers led by leader Juan Maria Antonio Rivera.

    In 1776, the next exploreration was led by Franciscan friars Francisco Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante. Half a century passed before there was any new adventure and money seekers arrived in search of beaver. These were known as the Mountain Men.

    Traders and TrappersAfter the Mexican Revolution, there were many that came to Utah for trading. New Mexican traders came a bought elk, buffalo, beaver, and other skins from the Comanches and Utes. They traded corn, rifles, and other things with the indians for indians as slaves.

    Traders and TrappersFamous Mountain men known as as Jim Bridger, Etienne Provost, Miles Goodyear and Jedediah Smith explored the area, of Utah. They trapped and traded for furs, talked with the Indians, and gave a lot of names to the area’s geographical features. Mountain men and indians annihilated the bufflo in this area and almost the beaver.

    Mormon Pioneer InfoThe mormon Pioneers settled in the land of Utah July 24th, 1847 lead by the Mormon Prophet Brigham Young. They started right away setteling the Valley. They settled at least 500 places in Utah.

    The race to complete the Transcontential Railroad ended up meeting in Promontory Utah. This was the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads together.

    Utah became a state on January 4th 1896. It became the 45th state in the US. It took about 50 40 years for Utah to become a state.

    Many Utahns were effected as relatives and friends joined the armed services. 21,000 Utahns saw war. 665 Died and 864 were wounded.

    The Great Depression of 1930 made it difficult for Utah to recieve any federal funding for the state, 30-60 percent of Utahns were on WPA. World War II also had effects on Utahns and the Depression.

    Because of Roosevelts New Deal, Utah was able to start projects that would benefit the state. There were camps and river aid help that were examples of things that Utah was able to get help with.

    WWII info Utah had fourteen important military installations operating during World War II. This created nearly 40,000 jobs in the state during World War II, more than half of them at Hill Field. There was an increase in federal paychecks and the local economy that helped out the state.
