PictureIsabel's and her little sister Ruth's master, Miss Mary Finch of Tew, Rode Island, died, and now Isabel, Ruth, Pastor Weeks, and Mr. Robert Finch, Miss Mary's only relative, are going to bury her. While they are there Isabel visits her mother grave.

PictureAfter they buried Miss Mary, Mr. Robert staked claim on the girls, but Isabel argues that there is a will Miss Mary had, saying to give the girls their freedom and their mother if she were still alive, but Mr. Robert ignored it, and sold them to Loyalists, Elihu Lockton and his wife Anne. Isabel and Ruth took the cloths on there back and some seeds their mother had.

PictureIsabel, Ruth, and the Locktons arrive in New York. Isabel gets to work by going with Curzon, slave to Mr. Bellingham, to the Tea Water Pump. Curzon asks her to become a spy for the rebels. She then goes to the Lockton household and gets work from the head household maid, Becky Berry.

Madam Lockton would put Isabel to work on washing pots, plates, beating eggs, remove spider webs, polish, or sweep, while Madam Lockton would sleep, write letters, or pick melodies out. Madam Lockton would complain every time she sees Isabel. One of these days the Master and the Madam have a fight about Washington and the King's ships.

PictureRuth becomes Madam Locton's personal maid. Lady Seymour, Master Lockton's aunt, comes to visit.

PictureWhile Isabel serves Lockton and his friends, she hears what they are talking about. They are saying they will bribe the rebels with money and give them land to get them to side with the Loyalists.

Isabel goes to Curzon in the night to tell him news of the bribe to the rebel army.

PictureRebels break into the house and start to look for the money the Loyalists are going to use to bribe the rebels with, but found nothing, since Master Lockton moved the money somewhere else. The rebels arrest Master Lockton.

PictureAfter the arrest Madam Lockton faints, and Isabel is sent to get Lady Seymour.

Lockton comes home from being arrested. Master and Madam have a fight. Isabel sneaks into the library and reads, and afterwards plants her mama's seeds.

PictureMayor of New York comes to have dinner with the Locktons, and Isabel serves them. As they talk she hears they are planning to kill the commander of the rebel army, George Washington. They write a document and sign all their names on the contract.

PictureAfter serving, Isabel hears a shriek and runs to the kitchen. Ruth starts to have an ailment, while Madam yells she has the devil in her. Madam threatens to sell Ruth.

Isabel sneaks out at night and goes to see Colonel Regan. She tells him about the talk of killing Washington and was promised Colonel Regan would try and free her and Ruth.

Isabel goes to Trinity Church. The rebels uncovered the plan to kill Washington. Master Lockton runs away without Madam Lockton.

PictureIsabel and Ruth go to a hanging. The hanging is for Hickery, because he is a Loyalist that betrayed the rebels.

Ten British ships dock downriver on Staten Island. Ruth has a small fit after the British stopped setting off muskets and cannons. British ships countinue sailing up the river.

PictureIsabel wakes up from being drugged by Madam Lockton. Isabel finds out she sold Ruth to someone in the West Indies. She and Madam Lockton have a fight, and Madam Lockton hits Isabel in the head with a picture frame. Isabel runs away, but is caught.

Isabel is trialed and found guilty. She is put in a dungeon.

PictureIsabel gets branded an I on her cheek as a sign of Insolence.

PictureThe British attacked by shooting cannons. The rebels retreat up the Islands. Master Lockton comes home.

The British capture the rebels, but killed most of them. Curzon and the rest of the rebels are stuck in the cold, wet dungeons.

PictureIsabel begins to bring Curzon and the rest of the rebels food.

The doctor comes to see Lady Seymour. She cannot talk or move at all. Everyone goes to the party to celebrate the Queen's birthday. Madam Lockton finds out Isabel was talking to a rebel leader and wacks her with a crop. Isabel finds out Madam Lockton did not sell Ruth, but sent her to Charlestown, and is still owned by her.

PictureIsabel decides to run away. She takes a map, a false pass, extra clothing, food, seeds, and money. Isabel says goodbye to Lady Seymour.

Isabel rescues Curzon from jail, and they sneak off. Isabel puts everything in a boat and rows away. Isabel and Curzon are free.
