  • Earth Day 2011

    Earth Day 2011
We can say our Community Garden truly began when about 200 of our local children planted seeds they wanted to see grow in our garden. Labeled proudly with names on colored popsicle sticks, the seed cups were evidence of our youths’ investment in making a difference in our community.
  • Seedlings are Transplanted

    Seedlings are Transplanted
A temporary garden site was created just yards away from the official site. Great care was taken to plant and care for those starter seeds, which seemed to burst from the containers almost immediately.
  • Legacy Bricks go on Sale

    Legacy Bricks go on Sale
mepower.orgWe launched a great fundraising opportunity that gave the CCDS family and community friends a way to support the garden in a lasting way. Engraved Legacy Bricks would soon allow supporters to honor a loved one, mark a big event, celebrate a community partnership, and even voice encouragement. The brick walkway would link the elements of the garden together and reflect the strong foundation upon which CCDS was created.

  • Unengraved Bricks Arrive

    Unengraved Bricks Arrive
A couple of pallets of unengraved bricks appeared one day and they were simply beautiful! Their arrival fanned the excitement of everyone as they imagined the garden one day paved with those bright bricks. Just as quickly, the first batch of bricks were on their way to the engravers and we had to try to patiently wait for their return!
  • Over 200 Legacy Bricks Sold

    Over 200 Legacy Bricks Sold
What?? How did that happen so fast? We sold over 200 Legacy Bricks in two weeks? And the orders were steadily coming in…
  • First Set of Bricks Get Engraved

First Set of Bricks Get Engraved
The first set of bricks returned and took each viewer’s breath away. Sealed and placed in a quiet corner of the warehouse, they were kept protected until it was time for their placement. Those of us without self-control had to keep thinking of new excuses to go into the warehouse to sneak another peek at the engraved bricks.
  • Planning Meeting

    Planning Meeting
The CCDS Community Garden Project players gathered to make preparations for the next wave of changes to the garden site. Irrigation systems installation, Savannah Hardscapes’ ground preparation, laying of the bricked pathways and the making of the beds were all scheduled. With over 330 engraved bricks, the archway, beds and benches recently donated, there was cause for much celebration.

First watermelon and canteloupe are used in lunch prep
Our garden’s first watermelon and cantaloupe were used in lunches for the workers in Quantum today. Sweet, juicy and home grown – these fruits were the first of many garden treasures to follow. Zucchini, tomatoes, corn, tomatoes, okra, and more tomatoes soon followed. Great seed planting, children of Savannah!
  • The Garden Gets It Shape

    The Garden Gets It Shape
Savannah Hardscapes (with the help of the Bobcat) began moving dirt and creating the pathways that will ultimately become our garden.
  • Hardscape Installation

    Hardscape Installation
It was a day of pure excitement when the crew from Savannah Hardscape came to prepare the land and install the bricks in the garden. Over the next couple of days, we would watch big things happening (e.g., another walkway was dug out, the bricks were placed, beds were formed, the gravel walks were made, engraved bricks were placed) with great frequency. At the end of each day, staff from both buildings would meet in the garden and marvel at the sights before them.

WTOC’s Visit to Our Hometown Hero
WTOC’s Jennifer Serda said they were so impressed with Savannah Hardscapes’ big donations to the CCDS Community Garden that they wanted to feature the company as its September Hometown Hero. Serda taped interviews with Hardscapes' co-owner William Rhangos and with CCDS Special Projects Manager Georgia Hancock. Serda said the segment would air 9/1/2011.
  • Our Beds Were Made

    Our Beds Were Made
Six members of Kole Management staff volunteered their time to build six of the main beds that we will soon use to plant vegetables, herbs, and fruit. It suddenly made the garden real to many of us to see these beautiful additions to the landscape. More planting is just around the corner!

The sod arrives and makes a difference.  The color of green seemed to awaken the garden.
  • Cultivating the Green Thumb

    Cultivating the Green Thumb
Georgia Hancock uses planting as a teaching opportunity for the workers.  Finding the “face” of the plant is important in its placement and look to the garden.

  • The Pergola Arrives!

    The Pergola Arrives!
The pergola is being assembled piece by piece.  It will be the focal point of the garden in Phase 1 and the gateway to future phases.

Beyond the completed pergola are CCDS participants who are planting seeds for the garden in Day Habilitation.  The pergola will have a backdrop of three Leyland Cyprus trees and will be surrounded in front by small border plants and vegetables.

    The Veggies Go In!
David works his magic and continues planting the cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and rosemary in some of the front beds.  Like Georgia, he has a “green thumb” and has tremendous gardening skills.
