3/5 Comprimise
The 3/5 comprimise was added to the constitution to determine representation in the House of Representatives, slaves equaled 3/5 of a person. This shows sectionalism over slavery and the concern of which side has poower in the government. -
Missouri Comprimise
This caused the United States to divide into two setions of free and slave states -
Abolitionist Movement
This era was when people starting to take action against slavery. People like Fedrick Douglass and Hariett Tubman were some of the people who led the movement and the fight against slavery. Along with this came supportors and opposers. -
Manifest Destiny
A time when people believed they had a God given right to take ohter's land. Opinions spilt between people who supported this and others who were against it. -
Mexican American War
When the United States obtain the land from the war the nation was spilt whether to make ithem free or slaves states. The nation was once again for making the new states free or slave states. -
Fugative Slave Act
Allowed people to capture fugative and runaway slaves to return them to their plantion. This act interfeared with the laws of the north since they were free states. Disputes began and caused tension between free and slave states. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
Allowed Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether they would be free or slave states. Pressure from te Union and the Confederacy ran upon them to make them either free or slave states. -
Dred Scott Desicion
A desicision mad by the supreme court that declared that slaves were not counted as people, but as property. This desicision divided the nation into two. Those who were against the desicision and those who suppoted the supreme's court desicision. -
Debates of election of 1858
In the debates the canidates started to question/ support topics of slavery. People started to take sides which only added to the already existing tension. -
Election of 1860
The election spilt the nation between political parties and their representatives.
