Canada Significant Events Time Line

  • World War 1

    World War 1
    There were four very important battles that happened in WW1. They were the battles of Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge and Passchendale. First was the battle of Ypres in April 1915. This battle was when gas was introduced by the Germans. The Candians were unprepared for this and many died. The second battle was the battle of Somme in September of 1916. This was the first time tanks were used and this battle helped to make new weaponry.it was significant because this was the first ever world war.
  • Treaty of Versallies

    Treaty of Versallies
    This is a significant event in Canadian history because it stopped all the war that was going on, it did take awhile for it to actually stop but it was good because people were finally at peace.
    I think that if this event didn't happen, Canada might not have been at peace today, the world could have been ruined. If this event didn't happen alot more distruction would have occured and more people would have lost their lives, the world would have been a mess, the war could have gone on alot longer
  • The Winnipeg General Strike

    The Winnipeg General Strike
    The Commitee of 1000 were powerful industrialists such as bankers and polititions fighting against the 300 000 workers on strike. This strike lasted about six weeks. Leaders were arrested, one man killed and 30 injured. It would take 30 years before the federal government recognized union and the right to collective bargaining. this was significant that one people died and 30 was injured. it was biggest general strike ever.

    In the early mid twenties there began a "dry belt" in the praries. Farms fell because of bankruptsies, droughts, dust storms and grasshoppers. In the Maritimes the pulp and paper/fishing industries were affected and in B.C. forestry/fishing/mining industries. Factories then started to close. To find a job some men had to "ride the rails", in search for a job. it was significant it started in a day and it last for about 10 years.

    because of this most of the country realized nuclear weapon is not safe and it is not helping anything. but U.S. and USSR was only two country who kept devloping. and for canda they stoped nclear for weapon use

    Each time Canadians suggested a new symbol to replace the Canadian Red Ensign, modelled after a British naval flag, there was controversy. Maple leaves, beavers, crosses, crown propositions that went no where. In 1964 Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson said he would introduce a new national flag. this was significant because it was nationwide debate and first time it didn't modelled after a british nabal flag.
  • October Crisis

    October Crisis
    On October 5th 1970 members of the FLQ kidnapped James Cross, a British diplomat, from this Montreal home.
    In exchange for cross's safe release FLQ made several demands, including release of FLQ members serving prison sentences for previous criminal acts.
    Feedral and Quebec authorities agreed to most demands but refused to to release any FLQ prisoner from jail.
    Then FLQ kidnapped Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte.

    It is the start of showing how the people can politics through the power of "peaceful" demonstrations , students were the driving force because with educatioit was significant because it was the only decade that has so unique culture
