    Padlock Law
    -Quebec made a law that prohibated any person propagate communism or bolshevism
    -Violation of the law could cause jail time for up to 13 months
    -This was the start of govermant action against Communisim in North America
  • Spies in Canada: Gouzenko Affair

    Spies in Canada:  Gouzenko Affair
    -Fled the Soveit embassy with classified documents of USSR spies
    -Told the Department of Justice about the spies
    -Once Canada recoved more proof of the spies they informed the US wihich started both countries into action -This one of the main sparks of the Cold War and it happend right in Ottawa

    -During the Koren War it became obvious the communist countries were allinced
    -NATO was formed to protect any country under attack by a communist country
    -It involved Canada, USA, and 10 Europen countries

    -From June 24, 1948 - May 12, 1949 the Soviets blocked all the Allies railways and canals into Berlin
    -The aim was to give Russia control of the entire city
    -The Allies just delivered all supplies through the airforce -This affected Canada because it was very close to them being involed in another europen war

    -This was the first direct warfare in the Cold war
    -26,000 Canadians were sent with 8 destroyers

    UN Peacekeeping:  The Suez Crisis and Pearson wins Nobel Prize
    -The Suez Crisis was military confrontation in late 1956 between Egypt on one side, and Britain, France and Israel on the other
    -Pearson proposed the worlds first ever peacekeeping force
    -Lester B. Pearson was the Canadian Minister of External Affairs when he won the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving the Suez Canal Crisis

    -A war between anti-communists and the north of Veitnam agianst the south of Veitnam and communist support
    -The end result was a communist victory dispite the masive support for South Vietnam
    -The war had huge loss for ethier side
    -Canada supported the anti communist forces for hope to speed up the process of the seemingly endless Cold War

    -John Diefenbaker struggled to determine whether Canada should acquire nuclear weapons or not
    -Minister of Defence George Peakes recommended that Canada integrate its air defences with the United States
    - The North American Aerospace Defence Command policy (NORAD) was approved by Diefenbaker in early 1957
    -Canada to this day, is still against nuclear wepons

    -NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) was created September 12, 1957
    -NORAD is a combined organization of the United States and Canada that provides aerospace warning, air sovereignty, and defense for North America.
    -DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line was a system of radar stations in the far northern Arctic region of Canada, it was to detect Soviet bombs
    -Theese two things made all Canadians feel much more safe

    -Sputnik(The first artificial earth satellite) launched October 4, 1957 by the USSR
    -It travled for 90 days and orbited earth about 1,400 times
    -This launch proved that the USSR had the technoligy to use long range nuclear missles
    -This intiated the Canadian space programs to lanch the Alouette

    -Avro CF-105 Arrow was a Canadian made technolgicaly advanced fighter jet
    -It was cancled uder a year after the first flight on February 20, 1959
    -This showed that Canada had the technoligy to be strong force in the air

    Withdrawal of certain United States' nuclear missiles from Turkey and Italy

    -Very close series throughout the entire thing
    -In the final game Paul Henderson scored in the final minuets to win it
    -It was a huge increase in national pride for Canada

    -The Berlin Wall was built on 13 August 1961
    -It completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin
    -This wall symbolized the "Iron Curtain" so its destruction was iconic in the end of the cold war

    -The launch codes were handed over to Russian President Boris Yeltsin
    -The end of the USSR was important to Canada because it led to the end of decades-long hostility between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, which had been the biggest part of the Cold War
