The North Face Foundation in 1968 by Douglas Tompkins and Kenneth Klopp.The name was inspired by a hiking trip the duo took in Minnesota. At the start, the only merchandise was highly selective targeted toward backpackers and climbers.

In the early 1970s the founder Sam Tick started manufacturing winter appeal such as; snowmobile suits, woolen vest. In the late 1970s they started manufacturing down filled jackets, which was a leading private label for the line at that time.
In 1985 the launched a line of down filled jackets called “Parkas.” This product became they’re number one selling merchandise.
In the mid 1990s to 2008 sales increase rapidly from $3 million to roughly 17.5 million in 2008. -
