Burke and Wills

  • Leaving Melbourne.

    Leaving Melbourne.
With 3 wagons and only a few camels to hold the 20 tones of storage they were bringing, the party left Melbourne to begin the journey across Australia.
  • Three days out.

Burke noted in his journal that the weather was not good, the sky was displeasing and they had to sleep in the wet. (They probably should have given up by now). The wagons found the going difficult, so they fell behind. They didn’t catch up until 20 days after leaving Melbourne.
  • Entering NSW.

    Entering NSW.
When the party finally crossed the Murray river and continued their journey into New South Wales, they sent the 3 hired wagons off to the darling, their next main destination. The cost of this was of major concern to Burke, so he decided to dismiss some of the men when they reached Balranald (Although they put up a fight).
  • At Gambanna.

When the group reached Gambanna, the last camp before they reached the Darling, Burke announced that each person would carry up to 30kg of personal equipment and had to walk all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The camels were required to carry all the stores they had. Wills was also promoted to 2nd in command.
  • The Darling.

    The Darling.
The town of Menindee on the river Darling was where they met up with the wagons again. Burke stayed 5 days at Thomas Paine's Hotel, then gathered his fittest animals and wagons and set off, hiring a man named William Wright to lead them to Torowoto swamp.
  • Goodbye, friends.

Burke, Wills, John King and Charley Gray continued on without the four men who remained at the Depot. Those four men were told to wait 3 months for Burke to return to the Depot without assuming that he had died or settled in QLD. So, they continued, and found the travelling easier than thought. they camped beside water each night and they crossed easily.
  • An "Amazing" meal.

    An "Amazing" meal.
Charley Gray found a large snake and killed it. They ate it at dinner and Burke fell sick, and was unable to continue the next day.
  • Caught.

Wills caught Charley Gray eating flour behind a tree, so he was punished. One of the camels died as well.
  • A Death.

They woke up to find Charley dead in his swag. They spent the rest of the day digging a shallow grave for him.
  • A missing camp.

The men were tired and were glad to get back to the Depot camp, but when they got there they found the camp deserted. There was a note saying that they returned to the darling. He decided not to follow the group back to the darling, but to follow the cooper creek, so he set off with 2 camels.
  • Landa the camel died.

Hew got bogged and the men tried to free him. they gave up and shot the animal and ate it.
  • No more camels.

The last camel, Rajah, fell over and refused to get up no matter what. He was shot and eaten.
  • Wills is gone.

Wills became too weak to continue, so he was left at a gunyah.
  • The End.

(did not supply date.) Burke became too weak to continue. they settled for the night and camped at a Waterhole. in the morning, Burke could not not get up. he died at eight o clock, leaving King abandoned miles fro the nearest white man.
