Bloodiest day in US history. Over 26,000 men are killed or MIA on both sides. Battle ends in a draw, but Union Army is able to keep General Lee from invading Maryland.

Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves that are in territories that the Union Army captures. Black soldiers must enlist to fight on Union Army.

Confederate general, Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union general, Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox Court House, VA. Civil War ends.

The 13th Amendment is ratified by all the states. Slavery is now illegal.
