  • Indiana Became a slave banned state

    Indiana became the nineteenth state to join the anti-slavery states
  • Congress started debating over Missouri's Admission to the anti slavery union

    Missouri was the biggest part of Louisiana territory. It was a trade headquarters because of the river and a lot of powerful slave owners were here. The north wanted to put laws to say no more slavery but this made the South really mad. Missouri ended up being a slave state and the southern line became the new boundary for slavery.

    Illinois became the 21st to join the movement for anti-slavery

    Sectionalism had expanded many topics when heading west and setting up.

    Sectionalism had created new political, religious, and reform movements, parties, etc. Unfortunately, the balance was difficult between free and slave states. The article "The Sectional Crisis" even called it an issue of national security.
  • Power struggle for slave vs free states

    Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. This helped keep balance.
  • Missouri’s admission to the Union was exposed

    The 24'th state had joined the union and it created a literal but physical line for slavery. Conflicts started about the meaning of the constitution. African and Native Americans felt like they were never going to be able to be part of the United States.   • Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the U.S.

    Andrew Jackson was a part of the democratic party. His idea was to rally up working white men nationwide to help support him during the 1828 elections. Ignoring slavery, Jackson went to different topics like expanding the United States.   • Liberty Party made

    The Liberty Party tried to end slavery and did not want it to continue moving west. They did not support woman's voices and got very few votes. Source - The Crisis Joined article.
  • Frederick's first anti slavery speech in Massachusetts

  • The 1842 Supreme Court case PRIGG V. PENNSYLVANIA

    The 1842 Supreme Court case PRIGG V. PENNSYLVANIA caused stiff tension between north antislavery activists and the rich and powerful slaveholders of the south. This led to most Northern states passing personal liberty laws. Source - The Crisis Joined
  • Texas and Florida admissions

    Texas and Florida were both slave states and gave the image that the federal government was pro-slavery and tipped the balance.
  • Free Soil movement

    The Free Soil Party was created by antislavery activists who wanted NOT have slavery in the new western land. They were small but packed a big punch by taking away votes.
  • Franklin Pierce became 14th president

    Franklin Pierce was a Democrat that served as president from 1853 -1857. He talked about having peace and prosperity when he became president. Source- whitehousehistory.org
  • Kansas and Nebraska act

    This caused lots of problems and violence. known as bleeding Kansas
  • Douglas Territory Plan

    Douglas had a plan to take a chunk of Nebraska and created it as Kansas territory because he wanted to finish the railroad and thought of opening the western land to slavery. This was lead to tearing the county apart. Source- Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men
  • The capture of Burns

    A 20-year-old man named Burns was physically attacked and jailed. A year before, he escaped slavery in Virginia. Burns was caught shortly after. Soon many people have got word of this capture. During court, A mob grew, shot a deputy, and demanded Burns be released but he was taken back to slavery. There were a lot like this all from the Fugitive Slave Law.   • Preston Brooks Attacks

    The parties got out of hand and in 1856, Democratic Representative Preston Brooks severely beat Republican Senator Charles Sumner with a cane.-Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown had assembled a group of people to raid Harper's Ferry, which was an arsenal. Brown's idea was to use the weapons to lead the slave revolt. many died, and Brown was imprisoned and executed.   • South Carolina issue "Declaration of the immediate causes"

    This Declaration discussed failures of the federal government, saying they are not enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act over other personal liberty laws and voted to succeed. Source- Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men

    Abraham Lincon was with the new Republican Party and was president from 1861-1865 and was president during the Civil War.
