  • Armenian Massacre

    Armenian Massacre
    Took place in Ottoman Empire. Young Turk government killed the Armenian population. They were killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and forced labor, and the deportation of women, children, the elderly and infirm on death marches to the Syrian Desert. 1-1.5 million people killed. Ends 1923.
  • Soviet Purges

    Soviet Purges
    It took place in Russia. People involved were Joseph Stalin and many of his political and miltary advisors and civillians. Stalin had man millions of civillians killed and their houses and crops burned because they opposed him. He often had his own political and military advisors killed simply becuase he feared they would overthrow him. The purges ended around 1938

    Rape of Nanjing
    Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers killed by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army in China. People were raped and killed for no reason. This was for propaganda purposes. 250,000-300,000 people were killed. Ended on February 18, 1938.

    Took place in Germany. Hitler killed Jewish people. He tried to rid the whole world of Jews because hitler thought Jews wanted to take over the world. 6 million jews were killed. Ended in 1945

    It took place in South Africa. Afrikaners and South Africans were involved. The violations were police brutality and blacks being arrested without reason. It happened because whites felt that blacks existed to serve them. About 600,000 people were affected by it.

    Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge
    Took place in North Vietnam. Pol Pot killed many citizens of North Vietnam. Some witnesses say they were told that the evacuation was because of the "threat of American bombing" and that they did not have to lock their houses since the Khmer Rouge would "take care of everything" until they returned. People who refused to evacuate would have their homes burned to the ground and would be killed immediately. About 3 milllion people were killed. Ends December 1999

    It took place in My Lai Vietnam. It was between civilians and the American soldiers of "Charlie Company" 1st battalion 20th infantry regiment. The Americans killed between 347 and 504 people.

    Uganda under Idi Amin
    Idi Amin persecuted and killed Ugandan exiles attempting to invade in 1972, along with and army of obote supporters. Mostly of the Acholi and Lango ethnic groups, which he massacred in their barracks. He also killed religious leaders of other ethnic groups, journalists, artists, scholars,and intellectuals. It is estimated that he killed between 100,000 and 500,000 people during his reign. His rule ended in 1979.

    Dictator Augusto Pinochet took power in 1973. He is acused of killing any political oponents he faced. Within 3 months of him taking power, the number of leftists he killed was said to be in the thousands. He also was holding thousands of political prisoners in the National Stadium. 1850 of them were killed and 1300 went missing. He exiled at least 200,000 Chilean citizens. It ended in 1990

Left-wing activists, militants, trade unionists, students, journalists, marxists, and peronist guerrillas were involved. the human rights violations were carried out by left-wing terrorists. it happened because the left-wing terrorists wanted to overthrow the government because it was made up of right-wings. about 9,000 to 30,000 people were affected

    It took place in Iraq. the Kurds, Turks, and Shiites were involved in it. The human rights violations were carried out by tterrorists using poison gas to kill people. about 182,000 people were killed

    It happened in Sierra Leone in Africa. It involved the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and children from Sierra Leone. The RUF didn't have enough soldiers to fight for them when they were invaded so they took children and then drugged them so they wouldn't have pain or fear. it happened because Sierra Leone was invaded and they needed more soldiers. About 10,000 children were taken and turned into soldiers

    It took place in Somalia. The barre regime, united nations, ethiopia, islamic courts union (ICU), and the transitional federal government (TFG) were involved. The violations were carried out by killings, torters, and forced recruitments. It happened because of an unstable political situation in Somalia. About 350,000-1,000,000 people have been killed.

    When Bosnia tried to secede, Serbia invaded with Yugoslavian war equipment in an attempt to "ethnically cleanse" the area. They were after Bosnian muslims. They claimed they were there to "free" Serbian orthodox christians living in Bosnia. The killings ended in 1995

The Hutu-led government killed the Tutsi population.It was the culmination of longstanding ethnic competition and tensions between the minority Tutsi, who had controlled power for centuries, and the majority Hutu peoples, who had come to power in the rebellion of 1959–62 that started the genocide.ABout 500,000-1,000,000 died. It ended in 1997.
