Beagle's Voyage Timeline

  • Beagle Set sail

    At the age of twenty two Beagle begins his journey around the world from Plymouth England. He sets sail in the HMS Beagle," A Cherokee-class 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, one of more than 100 ships of this class." The ship has approximately seventy three member aboard
  • Cape Verde Island

    The beagle first destination is at Cape Verde Island. With low expectations the crew find Cape Verde to be interesting. Many discoveries are made. New species and organisms are found during this exploration at Cape Verde Island. The ship stays at the island for approximately twenty three days and then leaves.
  • Salvador Brazil

    Beagle and his crew encounter brazil in the mist of summer. They explore the tropical rain forest for a few days. He describes his journey in the forest as, "beautiful beyond his wildest dreams". He also meets black slaves first hand and also observes there environment. The ship stays for approximately eighteen days and then leaves.
  • Rio de Janeiro

    The crew arrive at Rio de Janeiro on April, 3 1832. The Crew are surprised to receive mail from friends and family. The first three crew members die from malaria during that stop. In Rio they discover many small villages and find many good specimens of plants, insects and animals. The ship stays for twenty days and then leaves.
  • Tierra de Fuego, Argentina

    Beagle and his crew meet a new tribe. In the morning they try to communicate with the Fuegians. The present the Fuegians with some red cloth and they soon became allies.
  • Rio Negro, Argentina

    The beagle and his crew have collected a lot during this expedition. In Rio Negro they find villages and they try to even hunt a jaguar. They collected some more fossils to add to there collection and bought the head of a large animal.
  • Chiloe Island, Chile

    Beagle and his crew described this island as being covered with evergreen forest. Darwin and a few others tried to climb Mount San Pedro. The trees and vegetation were so thick that they hardly ever touched the ground with their feet. The crew eventually gave up in despair. They were also able to rescue some stranded Americans.
  • Sydney, Austrailia

    Beagle and his crew strolled the town in the evening. He noticed that there were many big houses, and tidy streets. In the evening Darwin took a stroll along a small stream and saw a few of the Platypus, which Darwin described as an extraordinary animal.
  • Cape town, Africa

    Beagle and his crew describe the area as rather bleak. "The first object in Cape Town which strikes the eye of a stranger, is the number of bullock wagons... I have as yet not mentioned the well known Table Mountain; this great mass of horizontally stratified sandstone rises quite close behind the town to a height of 3,500 feet."
