    Around the time of the 1930's, George Balanchine wanted to display the talent of his young dancers. At just the age of 12-13 years old, the young dancers began to make their breakthrough. Each girl had their own different style which made them unique. They were known as the “baby ballerinas.”

    The three Baby Ballerinas were knowns as Tamara Toumanova, Tania Riabouchinska, and Irina Boranova. Tamara was very dramatic, Tania was very light with a lot of personality, and Irina was very passionate, girly, and flirty.

    Months of nothing went on for Ballet Russe De Monte-Carlo and as well for the other ballet company. Sol Hurok decided to step in and try to save the day for both of them. They spent nine months traveling by train to different places to perform for people who were not familiar with the concept of dance.

    In 1931, The Ballet Russe was resurrected bringing dance back to life.

    In 1934 Ballet Russse de Monte-Carlo set out for their first American tour. Sol Hurok was the person who booked Ballet Russe de Monte- Carlo this opportunity. Sol Hurok was a very important person within the performing industry

    Basil and Blum had different visions for what they wanted for the company. Due to the fact of them not seeing eye to eye, Blum left the company.

    With a lot of work and effort, Wasily de Basil and Rene Blum re-enhanced the old Ballet Russe and named their new company Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo in 1937.

    Mass drama broke out between Massine and Basil over everything involving the Ballet Russe De Monte-carlo. This included arguments over choreography, music, and the company itself.

    In 1937, George Balanchine (a former choreographer for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe) became the Dance Master and principle choreographer for the new Ballet Russe.
  • A fresh start.

    In 1938, Massine was brought up to the challenge of creating new choreography due to him losing his rights over the previous choreo of Ballet Russe De Monte-Carlo. He had to create three new ballets.

    On September 3, 1939 War was declared. A lot of the dancers (Russia), did not have the correct papers to leave the country during the war. This unfortunate event caused BOTH ballet companies to travel over-seas together on a boat. This boat was headed straight to america where they would soon try to flourish again in dance.

    New conflict broke out Between Massine and Sol Hurok. Sol decided to separate himself from Massine and all of the drama. Sol stated that Massine was "one of the most difficult people to work with". Due to Sol being such a strong figure in the dance world, he cause Basil and his company to be left without any type of work.

    Sol tried to repair his ties with Basil with hopes of rejuvenating the company and its dancers. It ended up being a complete wreck and he once again left and set out on his own. Basil continued on with his hopes but ended up leaving the company in even worse shape. Their last performance was in Nov 1948.

    Ballet Russe De Monte-Carlo was enhanced due to the appearance of the american choreographer, Agnes De Mille. She brought meaning to the term "true American ballet."

    In 1933, Massines influence took over Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo (in London). He also introduced the symphonic orchestra to ballet and received very positive feedback. He brought more attention to male roles as well.

    Massine was the head choreographer for Basil and was a major help to him. Since Massine and Basil were no longer working with one another, Basil was left to fix a new problem; finding a new choreographer to help. Basil ended up hiring a new choreographer, but things started to get ugly when Basil and Massine began to attempt to steal dancers from one another.
