    WWI(1914-1918)
    As an outcome of WWI the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is formed and quickly regains control of Kosovo. As a minority, the Albanians are promised extensive minority rights treaties. The Albanians claim the guarantees are never implemented and that the Serbs engage in widespread massacres and repression in the 1920s. The Serbs accuse the Albanians of fomenting discontent in Kosovo.

    The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
  • Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

    Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
    Along with Slovenia, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, Serbia becomes one of the six republics that comprise the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under the Prime Ministership of Josep Broz Tito. (The new composition also included two autonomous regions, the provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina.)
  • Slovenia & Croatia Declare Independence.

     Slovenia & Croatia Declare Independence.
    Slovenia and Croatia declare independence. In response to Slovenia, the Yugoslav declares war. However, they call a ceasefire. War breaks out immediately upon Croatia’s declaration of independence. By the end of the year nearly one-third of the country is under Serb control. During this time the Serbs create the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina.
  • Peace Talks Between Serb & Kosovo

    Peace Talks Between Serb & Kosovo
    NATO issues an ultimatum and forces Serb and Kosovo Albanians to sit down to peace talks which fail. Eventually arrangements are made and agreed to for a Serb withdrawal from Kosovo. Kosovo becomes a United Nations protectorate but remains a de jure part of Serbia.
  • Serbia and Montenegro

    Serbia and Montenegro
    The Yugoslav Parliament agrees to form a new state, replacing the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia with a loose federation now called Serbia and Montenegro, and allowing for a further referendum on independence within three years. The arrangement is made in response to Montenegro’s growing discontent and desire for autonomy.
  • First Step Towards Membership

    First Step Towards Membership
    Serbia rejects a request by the Montenegrin government to end the union between the two countries early. Later that year they enter into talks on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union, the first step towards membership.

    Serbia's New Constitution
    Serbia holds its a referendum to approve a new constitution. As part of that new constitution, it continues to assert that Kosovo is an integral part of the country. Kosovo’s Albanian majority boycott the vote and the United Nations-sponsored talks on the future of the disputed province continue.

    Kosovo declares itself independent. Serbia rejects the claim calling it illegal.
  • Aleksandar Vučić Elected President

    Aleksandar Vučić Elected President
    Serbia’s prime minister, Aleksandar Vučić, has won by a landslide in the country’s presidential election, further strengthening his rule in the Balkan country.
