What: Mexico became independent from Spain
Where: New Spain (Mexico)
When:1800's-
Why: Natives & Mestizos disliked the political'economic reforms from Spain, the inequalities of life under the caste system. There wasn't enough food for everyone,and their wealth was sent to Spain.
So What?: The Natives felt like they wee being treated unfair, so they became an independent country. On September 16, 1810- "Grito de Dolores" (The Mexican cry of independence from Spain) -
Texas Independence from Mexico
Who: Stephen Austin010, Americans, Mexicans
What: U.S. wanted Texas to settle American families and Stephen Austin got the Mexican government's approval on certian conditiond:; Americans must follow a few Mexican rules
Where: Texas and Mexico
When: 1820's
Why: The land was fertile, and Texas was ideal for cotton production
So What?: This was the first time Mexico had to loose some of their land in such a violant way since the Americans didn't follow the rules given by the Mexican government. -
Mexican-American War :(
Who: Mexico, U.S., and President James Polk
What: Polk wanted Texas, California, and New Mexico to become part of the U.S., but Mexcio refused to give up the land!
Where: Battles broke out right above of the Rio Grande
When:1845-1848
Why: Mexico never declared Texas being theirs, and Polk wanted to expand the U.S.
So What?: Since Mexico lost the war, Mexico is now twice as small, and the U.S. is now bigger. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Who: Mexico and U.S.
What: Agreement of Mexico and U.S. about Mexico giving up half it's territory- California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah
Where: Mexico, the U.S. ceded land
When: 1848
Why: U.S. wanted to expand, so they gave Mexico 15 million dollars for damages of the war and half their land.
So What?: Mexico gave up a lot of their land do the U.S. and a lot of the Mexican culture remains in those states. This gives Mexico it's official country shape -
Gadsen Purchase
Who: President Pierce, Mexico, and U.S.
What: Pierce wanted to purchase extra land
Where: Melissa Valley, El Paso, West California, Tucson, Arizona
When: 1853
Why: Pierce wanted to secure this land to fullfill the railroad expansion in the west.
So What?: With this purchase, the south fork of Gila and the Colorado River was claimed by the U.S., and the north fork was claimed by Mexico. This set the final boundary adjustment between the U.S. and Mexico
